WELCOME TO RÍO CUARTO- CÓRDOBA- ARGENTINA
Location
Río Cuarto, called the “Empire of the South” because of its
independent spirit, is located in the very heart of Argentina. It
serves as the department head and occupies the second place
among the cities of the Province of Córdoba. It’s 220 km
away from Córdoba city and 601 km southwest of Buenos
Aires city.
This city is surrounded by prairies near an area of beautiful
hills, called “Comechingones”. Its geographic location makes
Río Cuarto an important busy urban center which still keeps
the flavor of a provincial town. Apart from that, Río Cuarto is
located between two well-known ports in the south:
Valparaiso (Chile) and Buenos Aires (Argentina), with a high
impact on the sea and land transportation of the Mercosur partners.
The origin of the city dates back to November 11th, 1786, when Marqués
Rafael de Sobre Monte formalized the foundation of a town named “Villa de la
Concepción del Río Cuarto”.
Climate
Río Cuarto is located at 482.62/1443 (metres/feet) over the sea level. The
weather is similar to the mediterranean climate, as it’s cold and dry during
winter, whereas in summer, it is warm and wet. Average temperature from
June to September is 9.5º C and from November to March, 24º C.
Population
Río Cuarto has around 160,000 inhabitants. In general it’s a comfortable city
to stay in because it allows friendly relationship among the inhabitants and it
provides all services and facilities as in any big city.
Communication
Río Cuarto is linked with the rest of the country and Latin America through 5
national routes and 6 provincial routes, 2 private railways and an airport. Two
close cities, Córdoba and Merlo (San Luis province) have access to
international flights, allowing easy contact with the world.
Economic Development
Due to its geographic location, Río Cuarto is an important center for
establishing contact with the rest of the country and the MERCOSUR. This fact
gives a strong commercial movement towards the city. It is
also the centre of all the financial and recreation activities of
an important and fertile agricultural region. As for
production, the main incomes are provided by the rural
sector. It is the main marketing centre of livestock in the
country’s interior.
Education
The National University of Río Cuarto is characterized as providing a high level
of education and it is recognized at a national level as one of the most
important universities in Argentina.
It offers undergraduate and graduate courses, conferences and meetings. It
has over 15.000 students.
With its combination of private and public educational institutions, Río Cuarto
can be compared with big cities in regards to high degree of educational
opportunities.
Leisure time
You have the possibility to visit different museums, parks and river coasts. The
most important museums are: the Arts, the Historical, the Thematical Rail
Museum and the Aeroespacial Technological Museum.
Located downtown, the Cathedral was declared a historical monument in
1986. It has an Italian style and it lodges the Immaculate Conception Virgin,
protector of the city.
Other important buildings are the San Francisco church, the Municipal Theater,
the Trapalanda Theater and the Andino Cultural Centre.
There are annual events, which attract many people from different places all
over de country, such as: the gauchos national encounter, car races, the Rural
Society farm shows and the National Biology
Olympics, among others.
Visitors may enjoy a good film in one of the
various cinemas, or may have a good time in
pubs and bars, or taste a good meal in modern
restaurants.
Tourism
Río Cuarto is located at the entrance of
Cordoba’s southern hills, near different towns:
Villa Rumipal, Santa Rosa de Calamuchita, and
Embalse de Río Tercero. In these places you can
practice different sports, go on some excursions and enjoy some nightlife.
Río Cuarto and its Surroundings
RELAX AND ENJOY IN RIO CUARTO AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
Only one hour from Río Cuarto, you can visit different small villages in the
middle of the Comechingones Hills. You will travel through winding roads
across valleys, streams, rivers and hills. One of the outstanding characteristics
of this whole area is that there is no contamination whatsoever: There are
quiet places to rest, and to find peace of mind. In the area you can find
camping grounds, hotels, hostels, a civic center with all services included.
Additionally, you can go fishing, trekking, mountain climbing, horse back
riding, as well as other adventure and cultural tourism.
To visit Río Cuarto and its surroundings is an adventure that the traveler will
never forget.
Alpa Corral
Alpa Corral is a picturesque valley 75 Km away from Río Cuarto. It is a
traditional place to rest, enjoy one day or a long stay in the countryside. There
are a lot of weekend houses, hostels and camping sites. It has a beautiful
river, which forms a natural swimming pool, where you can swim and enjoy
nice scenery at the same time. Near this village, you can walk among the
typical vegetation (Acacia caben, Prosopis nigra, Prosopis alba, Fagara coco,
Esquinus molle, etc) and fish trout in the crystalline streams.
Achiras
Located 70 Km away from Rio Cuarto, along the provincial route Nº 2. It is an
old and traditional small town with its typical mud built houses and its original
church from XIX century. There is a number of activities that you can do in
this area: take long walks, go horse back riding across valleys and low hills,
bird watching, etc. Near this location you can visit the “Cerro Inti Huasi”
(mountain Inti Huasi), where there are also very important archeological sites
of the Comechingones Indians.
RÍO de los SAUCES.
Río de los Sauces is an old village with houses from the XIX century. The
location gets its name from the hundreds of “sauces” trees (Salixhumboltiana)
that this area has. Agriculture and cattle production are the principal economic
activities. There are also pleasant green areas for camping, and eating a very
good barbecue of the world famous Argentinean beef.
Las Albahacas
At only 45 minutes from Río Cuarto you reach a magical
place, with fantastic scenery, clear water streams and
cypress forests. You can also walk through long paths
among typical vegetations, enjoy the birds singing or
walk along narrow streets with picturesque mud houses
