Ottonian vs. Ottoman
The Ottoman Empire consisted of a group of Muslim Turks and is named after an early leader,
Osman. The Ottomans ruled Anatolia, western Persia, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, western Arabia,
India, Southeast Asia, North Africa and much of Eastern Europe from 1290 to 1924.
The Ottonians were a dynasty of Saxon rulers founded by Henry the Fowler, but is known as
Ottonian after its three principal figures: Otto I, II and II. The Ottonians ruled Germany and
Austria from 919 to 1002.
