STUDENT LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORED BY: NOVA’S LIFETIME LEARNING INSTITUTE (LLI) The Lifetime Learning Institute (LLI) is a nonprofit, member-run organization sponsored by NOVA which provides continuing educational opportunities to older adults. Since Spring 2000, LLI has been awarding leadership and academic scholarships to students of all ages enrolled at the college. This year LLI is again offering a $2,000 Student Leadership Scholarship (known as the Knox Singleton Leadership Scholarship) and a second place scholarship of $1,000. Students at the Annandale Campus are eligible. (Deadline: March 14, 2011) Description of Scholarships: These scholarships will be awarded to students currently enrolled at the Annandale campus who have, through leadership, community service and personal example, made an outstanding contribution to the development of collegiality among the multicultural student body, College faculty/staff, and the surrounding community. These scholarships are not need-based. Former recipients are ineligible. Selection will be made by an LLI committee, which will interview candidates after an initial screening process. The scholarship money can only be used for tuition and books. It can be used either at NOVA or at a 4-year college to which the student transfers. Amount of Scholarship: Winner, $2,000; 2nd place, $1,000 Application Process: 1. Fill out the attached application form. 2. Include an original essay of no more than 500 words describing your campus and community service activities and why you should receive this scholarship. 3. Include a copy of your unofficial transcript. 4. Two or more letters of recommendation are required, at least one of which must be from a faculty or staff member of NOVA. Applicants may also apply for the LLI Academic Scholarship. Criteria for Selection: 1. Completed application form, preferably typewritten, with Student Permission For Release of Enrollment Verification Form (NVCC 125-94) attached. The latter may be downloaded from www.nvcc.edu in the “Forms Library.” 2. Personal essay. Describe how your leadership activities have contributed to the on-campus and off-campus communities. Provide information concerning your future career goals and how your service has helped or will help you achieve these goals. This may include a description of what you have done, and a reflection of why you feel it is important. 3. Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a NOVA faculty or staff member. Writers should send letters directly to the Office of Counseling, Attention: Mark Mannheimer at the Annandale Campus. These can be sent by email to mmannheimer@nvcc.edu. 4. Demonstrated voluntary (unpaid) community service on and off campus in the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area. Include the name and length of service for each organization mentioned. 5. Must be enrolled at the Annandale Campus at the time of application. 6. Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) must be 3.0 or better, based on at least 12 (twelve) completed credits. 7. Interview by a committee of LLI members and NOVA staff/faculty after initial screening of applications 8. The winners must be available to receive the scholarship checks at the June 7, 2011 Forum meeting of the Lifetime Learning Institute.
