The Graduate Peer Mentor acts as a mentor
for incoming
doctoral
students
participating
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
in the 2015 Competitive Edge Summer Research Program. The position starts on June
22, 2015 and ends on August 14, 2015. The Competitive Edge Summer Research
Program intends to facilitate participants’ acclimation to UCI prior to the start of their
graduate programs in the fall. The Graduate Peer Mentor will serve as a role model
advising students regarding all aspects of life as a graduate student.
The Graduate Peer Mentor position is not a residential position and will not include
compensation for housing.
Competitive Edge Peer Mentor
Information on compensation, specific requirements of the position, and a schedule of
the types of activities involved may be found on the attached job description. All
candidates will be required to have completed the mentoring excellence program by the
end of Spring 2015.

Compensation: $400 Summer Stipend
Graduate Peer Mentors will serve as role models to assigned mentee(s) during the eight weeks of the Competitive Edge Summer
Research Program from June 22, 2015 to August 14, 2015. Peer mentors will provide guidance/feedback on Summer Symposium
Research Presentations and other program assignments. Peer mentors will also support mentee(s) as they transition into their new
graduate program. Doctoral students in their third year or beyond are preferred (Second year students may be considered). Doctoral
students from the following academic programs are needed to mentor this year’s incoming cohort, and are strongly encouraged to submit
applications to serve as a peer mentor:

Serve as a role model and mentor for assigned incoming doctoral student(s) via a combination of the following:
a. Face-to-face meetings that support the mentoring relationship may include:
i. Lunch
ii. Department/school events for networking
iii. Other interactive activities of common interest
b. E-mail exchanges when face-to-face meetings are not possible
Check-in on mentee(s) in person or via e-mail on a weekly basis as they progress through the summer program.
Guide mentee(s) as they acclimate to life at UCI and the graduate program culture.
Share experiences to orient incoming student(s) into their first year of graduate school.
Provide feedback on presentations, program assignments, and research related writing.
Report any concerns regarding participant(s) progress or well-being to Program Coordinator.
Along with the other peer mentors plan 1-2 social events for the Competitive Edge cohort.
