The Prince William County Schools’ Code of Behavior has addressed several areas that are considered improper dress in any Prince William County school. Students are required to dress modestly and meet the standards of health, safety, cleanliness and decency. Their attire shall not be disruptive to the learning environment. We are requesting that students not wear the following articles of clothing to school: articles of clothing that advertise and/or promote the use of drugs or alcohol, or that display vulgar and/or inappropriate language or images, outside jackets worn inside the building, pants worn below the waistline, hats, scarves, headbands, or any other type of head covering unless related to one’s religious beliefs or practices; sunglasses, beachwear, sleeping apparel, undergarments worn as outer garments, white undershirts worn alone, halter tops, half-shirts, t-shirts and sweatshirts with waist-length arm holes, clothing that is too short or tight, see-through garments, bare midriff, long dresses, strapless dresses, spaghetti straps, tube or tank tops, bedroom slippers, flip-flops, high heels, shoes with cleats, shoes with wheels, socks only, jewelry or other items which could be regarded or used as a weapon. Shorts may be worn but must be longer than the end of the student’s fingertips when arms are extended downward. Students must wear shoes. If sandals or clogs are worn, they should have a strap around the heel. We encourage children to wear sneakers or rubber soled shoes since they will be going outside for P.E. and recess. Students will be asked to remove inappropriate items or we will try to find a suitable change of clothes for them. If we are unable to do so, a parent will be called to bring appropriate clothing. Additional information is contained in the Code of Behavior. If you have some concerns with a way a student is dressing, your first step should be to inform the students. The next time, contact the parents by sending home a dress code violation form. The 3 rd step would be to call the parents and the 4th time would be to send the student to the office. If the concerns continue to arise, please contact the guidance counselors or the administration. Message from the Nurse Parents of Rising Sixth-Grade Students: In 2006, the Virginia Assembly passed a law requiring all sixth-grade students to have had a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) booster within the past five years in order to enroll in school this fall. Without proof of this immunization, your child will not be able to enroll in school for the 2009-2010 school year. Please review your child’s shot record. If the last shot was administered more than five years from the beginning of the upcoming school year, please have this immunization done over the summer. This shot may be listed as T, Td, Dtap, and/or Tdap. Please call your doctor or local health department if you have any questions. Shots may be obtained from your doctor, military clinics, or the health department. Documentation can be sent to the clinic and I will update your child’s medical records. If your child receives the immunization after the end of the school year, you will need to mail or bring the shot record to your child’s middle school. The Prince William County Health Department may be contacted at the following locations: 9301 Lee Avenue Manassas, VA 20110 703-7926307 or 13792 Smoketown Road Woodbridge, VA 22191 703-792-7300. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Colleen B. Madigan RN, BSN, MA BRISTOW RUN PTO Thank you to everyone for making April such a GREAT month for collecting Box Tops and Campbell's Labels! Lots of classes collected over 100. They are: Kindergarten- Ms. Blanco, Ms. Garvey, and Ms. Zenoniani; 1st grade- Ms. Gregory, Ms. Heltibridle, Ms. Kesler, Ms. Shrader, and Ms. Starnes; 2nd grade- Ms. Edwards, and Ms. Wolfe; 3rd- Ms. Gallion, and Ms. Manning; 4th- Ms. Glenning, Ms. Gorham and Ms. McDannell; 5th- Ms. McLaughlin and Ms. Watson!!! The class with the most who won an extra recess one day is Ms. Blanco's class! In May we are having a Box Top Challenge and trying to see if the school can collect 1000 Box Tops, Campbell's Labels and Tyson's Project A+ Labels. Check and see if you have any hiding on products in your home! What to turn in from the labels: Box Tops need to have the box cut out that has the "Box Tops for Education" saying along with an expiration date. We need to be able to read the date to get credit for the label. The Campbell's Labels need to have the UPC's turned in. They can usually be found next to the picture of a child wearing a graduation hat. For all V8 products, we need to have the lid to the container turned in and not the UPC. This is the only brand of products where we don't get the UPC. The Tyson's Project A+ usually has the label where you open the package. That whole portion gets turned in. Thank you for all of your participation in these programs!
