Parents are welcome to add nay comments or suggestions they may have regarding the contents of this leaflet……. At the Upper stages of the school we have assistance from the DELTA project who come in and directly discuss drugs, both legal and illegal, raising very valuable awareness of risk and giving our children the skills to make informed choices. If I reach the decision to involve the police, or medical attention is required, contact will be made with parents. Parents will be advised that suspected drug misuse has occurred involving the son/daughter and relevant agencies will be informed as part of the Care and Welfare of your child. Strathallan Primary School Parent Guide to HEALTH EDUCATION January 2012 ISABELLE MCBAIN HEADTEACHER HEALTH PROMOTION This leaflet contains information on the Health Education programme taught at Strathallan Primary School. At the heart of our Health Education Curriculum is the belief in promoting the health of the whole child through Health Promotion. We at Strathallan recognise that education about health comes not only from what is taught at school but from the values, attitudes and environment demonstrated within school and in the wider community. We aim to: Create an environment where the children feel comfortable to learn, grow and grow up in Promote positive health behaviour Help the children understand that they have a role to play in feeling good! Promote class links with parents, the community and agencies to support all aspects of health development HEALTH EDUCATION Strathallan’s Health Education programme covers 3 aspects of health – Physical, Emotional and Social. As your child progresses through the school their knowledge of health matters will widen. The key to Health promotion is the development of skills and competencies which will help your child use their knowledge more effectively. These skills and competencies are relevant to our key themes in our health education programme which will help your child to: Feel good about themselves and to feel confident Be aware of what is meant by good health Put their awareness into day-to-day practice Recognise and assess dangers and deal with them appropriately Example Health Topics – Dental Care, Food Choices, Need for Rules, Bullying, Safety, Accident Procedures etc. Specific topics on Sex & Drug Education are taught in conjunction with advice from the Scottish Executive & Fife Council. Like all subjects, sex education build on what children already know, but takes account of each child’s age, understanding and stage of development. At the Early stages of school children will encounter topics which focus on the way their bodies grow, where living things come from and special people in their lives e.g. Everybody is different Feelings & emotions Personal profile By the Middle stages of the school pupils will be learning how their bodies change, how human life begins and being part of a family e.g. Body maintenance Feelings friendships At the Upper stages of the school specific sex education topics are taught that deal with the issues of physical and emotional changes at puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and birth and body image e.g. Sex Education is an important aspect of every child’s personal and social development and is therefore taught from P1 onwards. It is taught in a context that emphasises love & respect and the values of stable family life. Hygiene Growing up Conflict and change
