Expository Essay – Faction An expository essay seeks to explain, inform, or describe a topic to readers. An important topic or idea within in Divergent is the faction. In your expository essay, you will choose one of the five factions in the novel. You will use your novel to gather information about the faction you chose. Due on January 20, 2016 (We will be working on this in class.) 1st Paragraph (10 points) Objective: To provide readers background information on factions and to state which faction you will focus on. This paragraph must answer the following: What is a faction? Why is it important to Divergent? What are the five factions and what are their values? What faction will your essay focus on? Due on January 22, 2016 2nd Paragraph (10 points) Objective: To provide background information on your chosen faction. This paragraph must answer the following: What is your faction’s value? Define your faction’s value. What symbol symbolizes your faction? What does your faction believe to be “the fault of human personality”? Due on January 27, 2016 3rd Paragraph (20 points) Objective: To describe the philosophy of your faction. This paragraph must answer the following: What are the rules or beliefs of your faction? What are some things that they are against? 4th Paragraph Objective: To point out the faults of your faction. This paragraph must answer the following: Are there some beliefs of your faction that are impossible or unrealistic? Does your faction have any problems with other factions? Due on January 29, 2016 5th Paragraph (10 points) Objective: To summarize your essay. This paragraph must answer the following: What is a faction? What faction did your essay focus on? What is its importance to the society in Divergent? You must put all your paragraphs together by February 2 and bring your rough draft to class. We will have a writing workshop. Your rough draft is worth 20 points. Final draft is due on February 8 which is worth 30 points. Your final draft should be typed, 12-point font and in Times New Roman, and should have only minor grammatical and spelling errors. Paragraphs must be indented; essay must be titled; and paper should include citations (we will do this in class).
