Interpreting UCLA Extension Courses (Updated from Dr. Lee Grishman’s memo from Tuesday, October 17 th 2000) The use of courses taken through UCLA’s extension should be interpreted using the following guidelines: Courses: X 1 – X 199 & XL 1 – XL 199 & XLC 1 – XLC 199 These courses are equivalent to undergraduate courses offered by UCLA’s regular sessions. All X, XL, and XLC are transferable for unit and subject credit towards a BA or BS degree. Courses numbered 1 to 99 are lower division; those numbered 100 to 199 are upper division. Courses: XLC 200 – XLC 299 & These are graduate level courses. XLC 400 – XLC 499 Courses: X 300 – X 399 These are professional level courses designed for teachers and prospective teachers. These courses are not applicable to AVC or to transfer. Courses: X 400 – X 499 These courses are considered Professional level (post-baccalaureate). On occasion, they have been applicable to lower division courses (on a case by case basis). Check with Dr. Grishman if you have to evaluate such a course. UCLA’s departmental offices must be contacted in order to confirm their application. Courses: 700 – 799 These are non-credit courses. Note: Any course must be equivalent to 2.67 semester units to be useful for lower division requirements. One quarter unit is 2/3 of a semester unit. Any number of quarter units must be multiplied by 2 and divided by 3 to convert them to semester units. Updated 1-4-2007 by Luis Echeverría - Counselor
