ALTERNATIVES TO SCRIBER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL –
The following is intended to be an introduction to the many options available to high school-aged
students. It is up to each student and their family to explore the details of the program and to determine
what is best for that student. Each program has its own application, requirements, start-dates, etc.
Application to the program(s) of interest and formal withdrawal from Scriber Lake High School, if applicable,
is required and is completed by the student, and the student’s parent or guardian, if 19 or under.
DIPLOMA OPTIONSHigh School Completion – Local Community Colleges offer course work that leads to a Washington State
High School Diploma. To graduate, 21 credits are required plus the High School and Beyond Plan and
passing the state assessments in reading, writing, math and science. Students 16-18 years old pay full
tuition; those age 19 and over pay reduced tuition.


Edmonds’ Heights (formerly Home-School Resource Center) – Open to K-12 students who are
currently home-schooled or who are planning to home-school. A parent providing home-schooling is
required to have either 45 college level quarter credits, or to have completed a Home Based Instruction
course. An “Intent to Home-School Form” must be completed with Edmonds’ Heights. For information, to

Gateway to College – Offered at Lake Washington Technical Institute to 16-20 year olds who are
interested in completing their high school diploma and simultaneously earning college credit toward a career
certificate or an associate’s degree. Books and tuition are paid by a scholarship from the program. New
students become part of a learning community and are provided student success strategies, an academic
coach and career exploration as part of the program. For information, please go to the LWTI website or call

GED OPTIONSThe General Education Development (GED) is an alternative to a high school diploma. GED Certificates are
awarded to students who successfully pass tests in four content areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, and
Social Studies. Preparation Classes are offered for little or no cost at all of the local Community Colleges to
students 16 years old or older; the tests are also given there for $150.


CAREER & TECHNICAL OPPORTUNITIESCareer and Technical Programs+ -- Local Community and Vocational Colleges offer course work that
leads to a professional or technical certification or degree as well as a high school diploma and/or a GED.
Tuition and books are provided at no cost to the student. Students between the ages of 16-20 or 21
are eligible. A High School Release form is required for students 16-19 years of age. Entry to these
programs starts at the beginning of Fall, Winter and Spring terms. Space can fill quickly, so students should
apply well in advance of the term and continue attending high-school until a space opens up and they can
begin the program.

CEO (Career Education Options) at Shoreline Community College – Students may earn a GED

EDCAP (Edmonds Career Access Program) at Edmonds Community College – Students may
earn a high school diploma while completing a professional/technical degree. For an application and

Lake Washington Technical Academy (in Kirkland) – A high school completion program for
students wanting to earn a diploma while completing a profession/technical degree. For orientation

Youth Re-Engagement Program at Everett Community College – Students may earn a high
school diploma or GED along with a professional/technical degree. For orientation times and

I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) combines Adult Basic Education (GED or high school
completion) and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) education with job skills training, by having the
student complete a certificate in a brief professional or technical skills program at the college. The goal is to
help students transition into a marketable job in a short period of time. Students receive individualized
support with career exploration and preparation, financial aid advising, help with scholarship applications,

JOB Corps – A free vocational certification training program where students also earn a diploma or GED.
Students live on campus and are provided room & board. Upon completion, students receive job placement

Learning Center North – A Shoreline Community College educational site operated in conjunction with the
King County Work Training Program. The program serves youth ages 16-21 who have not completed high
school but who want to attain their GED and go on to college and/or employment. For more information,
