Fanny Crowne – Lenina’s confidante; voices the values of her caste;
worker in the bottling room at the Hatchery
Mustapha Mond – His Fordship, the Resident Controller for Western Europe
(one of only ten); wily, but kind man who remembers the pre-Utopian world
but prefers the World State Utopia (Mond=world)
Bernard Marx – Alpha male; considered small and ugly due to an accident
prior to his decanting; member of the Psychology Bureau of the Central
London Hatchery; discontented with World State (Marx=Karl Marx)
Helmholtz Watson – Alpha lecturer; Bernard’s friend; brilliant and
handsome author of propaganda (an Emotional Engineer) and would-be rebel
Warden – Alpha; talkative chief Administrator of the New Mexico Savage
Reservation who likes to corner a captive audience of tourists
John, “The Savage” – son of DHC and Linda; born on the Savage
Reservation where he was a misfit; brought to the World State society by
Bernard; worldview based on knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays
Linda - Beta; John’s mother; became pregnant by the DHC while at the
Savage Reservation and was accidentally left behind when she was lost in a
storm
Popé – Linda’s half-breed native lover at the Reservation; he gave her The
Complete Works of Shakespeare
Arch-Community Songster of Canterbury – secular equivalent of an
archbishop
Dr. Shaw – Linda’s physician who explains health and disease in Utopia
