April 3, 2012 Welcome to spring! It’s always great to see the seasons change, but please realize that this season often brings students with “Spring Fever”! I have kids and I know how hard it is to keep them motivated when the sun is shining and the day is warm. Encourage your child to keep grades up for just ONE MORE TERM! The End Of The Fifth Six-Week Term Was Thursday, March 29, and grade cards will be distributed today, April 3. Please remember that these are not the grades that go on the permanent record – only the grades rights after Christmas break and at the end of the year are permanent. These are just meant to help you determine the progress that your student is making. But do remember that if a grade is not at the level it needs to be, it can be very difficult to bring it up when there are a lot of points in the class. If your child is struggling, remember to contact the teachers. Most of our teachers stay after school and are available before school to help. Also, we still offer the free afterschool tutoring. Encourage your child to take advantage of this if needed. Seniors and Project Grad: Please make sure you have turned in your transportation permission forms to Mueller and parent t-shirt order as soon as possible. End Of The Year Testing Is Coming Soon: End of Course testing is upon us! Students will take these tests to prove their knowledge in specific subjects. First on April 25 students will take Alg I and Alg II EOC courses if they are in one of those classes. On April 27 we will give EOC’s in Biology I, American History and civics/government. May 2nd brings EOC’s in English I and II, and on May 3rd our geometry students will show their knowledge. Please help us to encourage our students to do their best. I know our kids are some of the smartest around, but they sometimes don’t seem to be motivated to do well on this assessment. We need to let the world know how well we can do. How Can I Help? Encourage your child to do well Make sure the child gets a good night’s sleep the night before Encourage the child to eat a good breakfast – preferably something with carbohydrates –which is breads or cereals. Spring Play: On Friday, April 13 the drama dept will perform “Days of our Nights” at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym. Come see a great performance for only $3.00. Career Day at Fatima: On March 23 a variety of people from various occupations were at Fatima. Students rotated through their chosen presentations to hear about different occupations. This always helps our students think about their futures and what they want to do in life. So if you remember, ask them about the presentations and what they learned. Awards Assembly: On April 25 at 6:00 Fatima will host its academic awards assembly. This is the time that we honor the students who go the extra mile towards academic excellence. It’s always great to see our kids all dressed up and receiving honors for their hard work and dedication for the year. So come on out and support our local recipients. Shine the shoes and get out the pretty dresses. Prom will be held on April 21st. It’s always fun to see the students in their finest garbs acting like such ladies and gentlemen. This year the prom will be held at the Lions Field. Art Club Headed To The Fox Theater: On March 30 students in the Art Club headed to the fabulous Fox Theater to see a production. Please note the many camps and programs that are available to students this summer. These look GREAT on resumes! Juniors Need To Be Completing Tours of Colleges: By the time a senior enters his or her first day of senior year, he or she should know the 2-5 schools he or she would like to apply for. The only way to know what a school is REALLY like is to do a campus visit. These should be set up during the junior year. It is best to attend when the school is in session so you can see the student body and the professors and get a feel for the real school environment. Please realize that most colleges are out of session the first part of May, so if you still want to visit a school, you should do this in April. You can go to any website and find the admissions office to call and set up a visit, or you can email me and I have a list of phone numbers. I also have a packet of papers that tells you what to do and ask on a visit. Scheduling: All students should have put their schedules in the computer and turned in their signed 5 year plans. Soon we will hit the magic button and see how many students get all the classes they requested. If their schedule doesn’t work, I will use the alternates to make a schedule. If this still doesn’t work, I will call them in to see what we need to do. Hopefully before the end of the year I will be able to give the students their schedules for next year along with their locker assignments. If they have any questions, they can talk to me then. If a student likes his or her schedule, he or she will NOT need to come in before the first day of school. If a student changes his or her mind over the summer and wants to change a schedule, there will be two days before school to come in and see what we can do. We can also change schedules on the first days of school. Students or parents can also email me at muellerd@fatima.k12.mo.us or call (573) 455-2375 to talk about schedules. Schwartze Scholarship Interviews: The Schwartze scholarship packets were handed directly to the students who qualified. FYI – to receive a Trust I scholarship application, a student must be in the upper 20% of the class. For the Trust II scholarship application, a student must be in the top 33.3% of the class. The interview day is Wednesday, April 11. Students should have an interview schedule on their locker. Ms. Rolwes is going to practice some interviewing strategies to help them feel more prepared. AP Tests – Fatima’s AP Tests for Calculus will be May 9 at 8:00 sharp. It will be held in the board of education room and will take about 3-4 hours. Freshmen and sophomore COPS Test – I have attached the results of the COPS inventory to the freshman and sophomore schedule papers. This is an interest inventory to help the students determine the field of study that is best suited for him or her. It’s a good way to get the students thinking once again about their futures. Sophomores and the ASVAB test: On March 15 the sophomores took the ASVAB test as an interest inventory. This is also an inventory that can be used to help students determine a field of study that best fits their personality. Students usually like getting the results of this inventory since it tests a variety of interest areas such as the traditional math and verbal abilities but also the more obscure such as assembling objects and mechanical comprehension. The Joke’s On You Bad Spellers A warthog hits this lady and the husband calls 911. The operator asks, "Where are you at"? The husband replies, "I'm on Eucolipstic Road." The operator asks, "Can you spell that for me?" "Well... I'll just drag her over to Oak so you can you pick her up there?" And Smart Blondes A lawyer and a blonde are sitting next to each other on a long flight from LA to NY. The lawyer leans over to her and asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde just wants to take a nap, so she politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is really easy and a lot of fun. He explains" I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5, and vice-versa." Again, she politely declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now somewhat agitated, says, "Okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500," figuring that since she is a blonde that he will easily win the match. This catches the blonde's attention and, figuring that there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches in to her purse, pulls out a five dollar bill and hands it to the lawyer. Now, it's the blonde's turn. She asks the lawyer: "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?" The lawyer looks at her with a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references. He taps into the Air phone with his modem and searches the Net and the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he sends E-mails to all his coworkers and friends he knows. After over an hour, he wakes the blonde and hands her $500. The blonde politely takes the $500 and turns away to get back to sleep.
