(Ref: DISS/Independent Contractors/Mainstream Tutors/2011)
Purpose: The purpose of the job is to facilitate learning at a UNISA Regional Centre; through face-to-face and/or
videoconferencing tutorials; on Saturdays and/or weekday evenings in the subjects identified.
General requirements:
 An Honours Degree, with the relevant subject as a major.
 Ability to work with adult learners.
 Willingness to undergo training on various aspects of tutoring.
 Teaching/tutoring experience will be an advantage.
Recommendation
 Own transport is recommended
Duties
Facilitation of Learning: As subject specialists, tutors help learners in a variety of ways to understand their course
material to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary in their fields of study. The tutor’s assistance is
determined and confined by the mode of delivery, namely, the ODL study package. The tutor’s role in face-to-face
tutorials is therefore more facilitative than didactic, and entails encouraging dialogue between themselves and students,
among students, and between students and the academic and administrative structures of UNISA.
Counselling and advising - students: The counselling role of the tutor is concerned with the identification of the
general problems of students, assisting them to find ways of solving these problems, and to develop the necessary
learning skills which will make them self-reliant or autonomous learners. Students requiring specialised/professional
counselling support shall be referred to the Bureau for Student Counselling and Career Development (BSCCD).
Administrative Role: The administrative role of the tutor is critical in the quality assurance, efficient delivery and
management of tutorial services. This includes liaison with the Learning Centre staff, Tutorial Services Administration and
Academic departments.
Assumption of duty: January 2012
Remuneration: R250 per hour (including travel)
