Szeto Ho Secondary School 20th November, 2008 Morning Assembly by 5G3 Trendy Communication Methods A: David Mo Man Tat D: Dicky Lee Ka Ho N: Natalie Tse Ka Yee V: Vanessa Lo Yee Shan N: Hi, Dicky! You look very busy. What are you doing? D: Shhh…I’m sending an SMS to my girlfriend with my mobile phone. V: You shouldn’t have done that, you know. It’s against the school rules to carry your mobile phone, let alone sending love messages in the playground. A: Objection! We’re teenagers of the 21st century, you know. There is nothing wrong with sending SMS even at school. D: Thanks David. You’re my real buddy. Actually, being trendy teenagers, we should familiarize ourselves with the fashionable communication methods nowadays. Do you two girls know what the trendiest methods of communication are? N: Oh! Yes. The popular communication methods include Xanga, Blog, Facebook, MSN, SMS, emails and the mobile phone. They are part of the teenage life now. The reason for their popularity is “peer influence”. That means if one person is addicted to one of these forms of communication, their friends will follow suit. V: You are right. I also use Xanga and Blog to share the happiness or sadness of my everyday life with my friends. It can build up our experience together and consolidate our friendship. D: Both of you are smart girls. Amongst these cool communication tools, I would like to use SMS most. SMS stands for Short Message Service. It is a text message that can be sent from your computer or cell phone to another cell phone. You can also send text messages to other wireless devices. A: SMS allows you to send instant text messages to your friends and family or start making new friends! It's fast. It's easy. And it's cool! D: Yes, I also like it because I can send messages secretly even in class. A: I like to use MSN to chat with my friends at home. It is because sending and receiving messages takes only an instant. Sometimes, when I find it embarrassing to say something, I prefer to put it in writing and send it through MSN. N: Oops! Besides these trendy communications methods, I also like to chat with my friends with my mobile phone since it is a good way to kill the time when I feel idle and bored. V: But it affects your health. For example, it may hurt your neck if you keep talking with your cell phone in the same posture for a prolonged period of time. You will feel pain. Besides, there have been fears that such phones could cause brain cancer because they emit radiofrequency (RF) energy! N: Although these means of communication are very popular in our everyday lives, there are other negative consequences, too. For example, if students always use SMS in class, that will affect their academic performance. Wasting their time on some useless gimmicks makes them learn nothing at all in the precious class time! A: Oh! I see. I understand now. Even though my friends are very important, if I spend time exchanging messages, I’ll have no time to do my revision. As a result, I should stop this habit. V: It’s good to hear that. Actually, I think we should treasure face-to-face communication as you can see your friend’s face and hear his/her sound directly. F.D.B.W.A.
