Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to Fort Richmond Collegiate. We are happy to have your son or daughter join our school. We feel very
fortunate to have student representatives from many different countries at Fort Richmond Collegiate. As a result of our
multi-cultural community we have had a great deal of experience working with English as an Additional Language (EAL)
learners. Students are given opportunities to celebrate and showcase their culture through school activities such as
Culture Jam and the EAL Potluck Supper. Students are also encouraged to join school clubs and participate in a variety
of activities to develop friendships and the English language.
Our experience tells us that where language acquisition is concerned, it is important to take as much time as is necessary
to learn the English language well before graduation. It is our goal to ensure that every graduate is able to successfully
complete a regular grade 12 English credit in their final year of school. Although many of our Canadian born students
and also students who begin their studies in Canada at an early age graduate at age 17 or 18 yars; we have discovered
that our students who immigrate at a later age are more successful after high school if they develop a strong foundation
with the English language before taking on the full academic challenge. These students often graduate at 19, 20 or as
late as 21 years of age. The appropriate program recommended by our EAL staff will depend on the specific skill
development of your son or daughter. Upon arrival students are placed in a grade that reflects their age, not their
English level or the grade which was completed in their home country. .
The credits from any previous schooling of your child will be assessed by a case manager and each student will receive
credit for previous years of study. However, the year of graduation will be determined by the student’s ability to
complete the grade 12 English course requirement. Each year, the plan for graduation will be reviewed to ensure that
the student has the skills (both academic and in English comprehension) to be successful after graduation
Please note that we encourage students to take advantage of the free education provided in Canadian high schools. This
foundation in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English is essential for future academic success in university or
college.
Once again, we look forward to working with your son or daughter.
Most Sincerely,
The staff of Fort Richmond Collegiate
