DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Excavator Operator
Location/Department: Quarry
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Foreman
Date: August 25, 2004
Summary Operates big track mounted excavator 100,000 pounds or larger
vehicle equipped with mounted hydraulically powered bucket or scoop to
lift and transport bulk materials to load rock trucks by performing the
following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties
may be assigned.
Starts engine, shifts gears, presses pedals, and turns steering wheel to
operate excavator.
Moves levers to lower and tilt bucket to force bucket into bulk material.
Moves levers to raise and tilt bucket when filled, and moves levers to
dump material into rock truck.
Maintains steady productivity to keep plant production up to 350-400 tons
per hour.
Uses excavator to sort through shot rock. Finds rock 2 feet in diameter to
send to the crusher. Sends bigger rock to the rock breaker. Sends mud and
waste to the dump. Loads stripping material as needed.
Keeps working area level. Keeps all loose rock out of rock trucks path.
Keeps clean and straight high wall and quarry floor level.
Performs routine maintenance on loader such as lubricating, fueling, and
cleaning.
Controls the work area around the excavator and any other employees in
the area.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises 3 to 4 employees in the quarry. Carries out supervisory
responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and
applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees and directing
work.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be

Education and/or Experience
Six months to one year of experience on a production excavator.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence,
and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively
present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers,
clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using
whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate,
ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems
involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
