Dear Confreres
The recently concluded International Symposium on “Theological Foundations and
Pastoral Implications of Pallottine Charism” held at Prabodhana, Mysore, was a noteworthy attempt to delve deeper into the understanding of the Charism. The presence of Very Rev. Fr. Jacob Nampudakam, the Rector General, Rev. Fr. Martin Manus,
General Consultor, Rt. Rev. Seamus Freeman, Bishop of Ossory Ireland and the former
Rector General, along with over a hundred other participants, including Provincials,
Regional Superiors, Delegate Superiors, Theology Professors, Sisters, Fathers, Brothers and Lay People from different parts of the globe, underlined the importance and significance of this event. The theological foundations were examined and the pastoral implications were spelt out. It was a common search by various members of the Union, for a deeper understanding of the Pallottine Charism, and how it could be realized in our present-day context.
While talking to one of our confreres about the importance of the Union of the Catholic
Apostolate, he remarked: “You will talk good about the Union as long as you are the
Provincial”. This could be true. But the fact is the Union has nothing to do with being good or bad. It is part of the heritage left to us by our Founder. It is that structural component that gives concrete expression to the vision of the Founder: i.e. to revive faith and rekindle charity, through the collaborative efforts of priests, sisters and lay people, using our talents, abilities, intellect, will, and all available material resources. That was the dream of Vincent Pallotti.
It is now time for us to work towards the full realization of the Charism. Our work and apostolate should reflect the fullest expression of the Pallottine Charism. In one of his writings Vincent Pallotti stated that everyone should live his life as if he himself was the founder. That is what we should be doing. May the spirit of our Founder set our hearts and minds on fire, so that urged by the love of Christ we may move on to spread the love and mercy of God to every human being.
Fr. Pedro Camilo Simoes, SAC
Provincial
