IB Environmental Systems PS(b) Modelling Ecosystems Criteria: CE, MS, Lab Partner(s): Theory: An ecosystem is the interaction of the community with the physical environment. [Expand on the theory when you prepare your lab report.] In this investigation you will model an ecosystem using the bottle biology methods presented in class. Procedures: 1. Construct an ecosystem model. Use the bottle biology handouts to help you decide on the tools and materials to use. 2. Answer the following questions: (a) What kind of ecosystem do you intend to model? (b) Prepare a detailed list of the materials and tools you use to build the model. (c) Is your model self-sustaining or will it require maintenance over the course of the experiment? If the model is not self-sustaining, what will you need to do in order to upkeep the model? 3. Identify the dependent, independent and control variables. 4. Plan data collection. Observations should be made at least twice weekly. Record any steps taken to maintain your model. 5. Make any requests for additional equipment in order to maintain your model or to use for data collection (microscope, slides, pipettes etc) at least one day in advance. Your final lab report is due on Monday, 20. October. A complete lab report should be written that follows the lab report format. Expand on the theory, include a materials list, and write how you constructed the model. You will determine the extend of data collection and data processing. It may help to pose specific questions that you’ve considered in order to write a thoughtful conclusions and evaluation section.
