Job Purpose: West Sussex County Council implemented a 20mph speed limit on residential streets in Chichester in 2013. The purpose of this role is to carry out intensive community engagement (including social marketing) with local residents and community groups to help raise awareness of the 20mph scheme and its benefits to the local community. Dimensions of Job: This is the first post of its kind for Sustrans and provides an exciting opportunity for someone to ‘pilot’ an innovative approach to affecting behaviour change in and around a 20mph area. The job holder will be expected to work closely with West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council. Place in organisational structure: The Officer will report to the Smarter Choices Coordinator and there will be close liaison with Council Officers involved in the implementation of the 20mph scheme. To carry out intensive community engagement (including social marketing) with local residents and community groups to help raise awareness of the 20mph scheme and its benefits. This effective community engagement will help change people’s behaviours and attitudes to increase compliance with 20mph; 2. To organise and run promotional events and activities, which help raise awareness of 20mph and support increases in walking and cycling e.g. led walks and rides, Dr Bikes and street closures; 3. To work with the Communications and Marketing team in the provision of resources and promotional materials; 4. To recruit, support and train a network of ‘20mph Champions’ within the local area. The Champions will assist with promoting the benefits of 20mph through helping with practical activities and/or general advocacy; 5. To develop a toolkit and training package for the ‘20mph Champions’, which will help them to engage effectively within their local communities. To carry out residential surveys, which assess changes in attitudes towards 20mph and increases in walking and cycling; To Undertake evaluation of speed reduction, in partnership with West Sussex County Council; To work in partnership e.g. with local authority staff, the Sustrans Bike It Officer, 20’s Plenty for Chichester, voluntary and community groups, schools, businesses and Sussex Police Service; To develop innovative approaches to changing driver behaviour To work closely with Sustrans’ Street Design Team in the identification of potential street design schemes, which could aid in the reduction of speed; To carry out general administrative duties, including quarterly report writing to project funders; To share project progress, outcomes and learning with Sustrans staff and local authority partners through presentations, workshops and case studies; To support and comply with the organisation's policy for the management of Health and Safety; To work in accordance with the arrangements described in the organisation's Health and Safety management system including any project or department specific requirements; To carry out other duties as required. Working Conditions: The post holder will be one of around 80 community-based staff across the UK and will live close to the nominated office base, although there may be opportunities to work from home at times. Occasional overnight stays away from home, weekend and early/late working may be required. The post holder must be prepared to walk, cycle and use public transport for the majority of daily work journeys Employment will be conditional on clearance by an Enhanced DBS Disclosure check.
