OPEC - To meet the goal of keeping oil prices steady, several oil-exporting countries
formed the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1960.
a. Today, OPEC has 11 members. Six are SW Asian countries.
b. But OPEC also includes oil producers outside the region. Venezuela, Algeria,
Nigeria, Libya, and Indonesia are all OPEC members.
c. In addition, not all SW Asian oil producers belong to OPEC. Bahrain, Yemen, Oman,
and Syria have not joined.
3. Human Development Index (HDI) – This is a country ranking that measures standard of
living (how well people live) by considering qualities such as countries educational
opportunities, health care, infant mortality rate, etc.
4. Poverty in SW Asia: Many countries in SW Asia still suffer from poverty because
1) They don’t make enough money from oil to bring their countries out of poverty
2) Their governments do not use oil money to improve their people’s lives.
5. Monotheistic religion – Belief in only one God
6. Geographic diversity in Southwest Asia has led to unequal standards of living.
a. Countries with large oil reserves have developed this resource and profited from its
sale.
b. Countries with scarce oil reserves have not developed as rapidly.
7. There are several forms of government. Each form of government includes different
characteristics and sources of power.
a. Theocracy- rule by religious leaders who make decisions.
b. Monarchy- rule by a king and/or queen.
c. Dictatorship- rule by one person who is supported by the army.
d. Democracy- rule by the people.
e. Republic- people vote to elect representatives.
