University of British Columbia https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/vancouver/bcyt.ezc#gar For general admission into the university, Foundations of Mathematics 12 or PreCalculus 11 will be considered. That being said, very few student get in with only a grade eleven level math (<1%). This has already passed through the Senate at the university. This is a new development. In the past, Applications of Mathematics 12 was not accepted for general admission. Applicants to UBC are not required to write the BC Provincial Exams, other than those required for high school graduation. BC Provincial Exam grades, including exams for English 12 or English 12 First Peoples, will be incorporated in the admission decision only if they increase an applicant’s admission average. For students planning to major in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science or other math intensive programs, the Department of Mathematics is recommending that students complete one of the following two sets of high school courses: 1) Pre-calc 20 and 30 + Foundations 20 and 30 2) Pre-calc 20 and 30 + Foundations 20 + Calculus 30 The University of Regina is in the process of examining the development of a number of 20- and 30-level, non-credit and credit courses that will assist students who want or require a mathematics pathway that they did not complete while in high school. We encourage students to complete the Common Grade 10 course for Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus. This will provide the student with the most flexibility with the University of Regina math courses designed to assist students wanting to complete a pathway that they did not complete while in high school. Please note that these motions are proposals that require approval at various levels of the University of Regina and as such are subject to change at anytime throughout the formal approval process. It is our hope that this information is a guide to inform students, parents, schools, and counselors until such time as the approval process is complete. Key Notes: Post-secondary institutions are in competition. The demographics in Canada are changing. There are far fewer students entering post-secondary institutions. Institutions are looking for ways to weed students in instead of weeding students out via (unnecessary) math requirements. UBC will accept either Foundations of Mathematics 12 or Pre-Calculus 11 for general admission but very few (<1%) of students have traditionally gotten in with just grade eleven mathematics. In the past, only Principles of Mathematics was accepted for general admission. Relatively speaking, few of our students go to UBC; but, we care about what UBC does since the other institutions in BC look to what UBC does in order to make their own admission decisions. The content of the new courses was developed in response to what post-secondary institutions, apprenticeship and trades, and business and industry outlined as required in order for students to continue to be successful at school, in an apprenticeship, or in the workplace as a paid employee or as a volunteer.
