Library Support of
Distance Learning
The Library provides information resources and services to support Old Dominion
University’s distance-learning programs through the Library’s Web site at
http://www.lib.odu.edu. In addition to the electronic databases and resources purchased
by the Library, students and faculty have access to electronic databases, indexes and
abstracts, reference sources, and full-text journals and resources through the Virtual
Library of Virginia (VIVA). From the Library’s Web site, users can search library
holdings in the catalog and borrow materials from the Library’s collection and from other
libraries by submitting an electronic interlibrary loan request. Document delivery is
available to distance learners and faculty through Ingenta Document Delivery, a
commercial database of current article information. Reserve materials are provided either
by electronic reserves or with print copies available at distance-learning sites.
Instruction services for distance learners include self-paced Web-based tutorials designed
to build lifelong information skills, on-line guides to library and Web resources, “How
To” guides, and a series of Web pages to help them search for and obtain materials.
Librarians teach televised class sessions, participate in televised orientation sessions
(Monarch Moments), and create self-paced institutional tutorials accessible from the
Library’s Web site.

Access to
Electronic
Information
Distance learners have access to the Library’s Web site at the site library, in computer
labs, in site directors' offices, and at home.
On-line services and resources available from the Library’s Web site include information
resources, interlibrary loan and document delivery services, ODU databases, VIVA
databases, the Library’s on-line catalog, electronic databases, library research and
instructional materials, instructional tutorials, library guides, and a selection of digitized
primary sources. The Library also provides telephone and e-mail reference services.
Materials from the Library’s collection can be requested through Interlibrary Loan
Services using electronic request forms from the Library’s Web site. Access to on-line
databases and full-text journals is restricted to students, faculty, and staff by use of a
standard proxy server. Electronic reserves and selected electronic journals require an
end user to log in using a Campus ID number and password. The Library is using a
product called Ezproxy, which provides the same remote availability, access restriction,
and login information and does not require end-users to reconfigure their computers, nor
limit access to select Internet browsers.
Materials from the Library’s collection and from interlibrary loan are also delivered by
courier to the Higher Education Centers, by UPS, or by electronic delivery methods to
remote sites using Ariel transmission, Prospero software, or fax.
