Classification- Hutu and the Tutsi of Rwanda. Tutsi was the higher class about ten
percent of the population. Hutu about 90 percent of Rwanda population. Hutus were the
lower class and workers. Tutsi were a lighter skin than the Hutus. One language and one
God were in the country. Belgian bishop gave higher positions to the Tutsis.
Symbolism- Tutsis had a longer but skinner nose than the Hutus. The skin of the Hutus
was darker than that of the Tutsis. Hutu Power began a slogan of the Hutu rebellious
program.
Dehumanization- Guy logiest supporter of democracy wanted to turn tides on Tutsis.
Called the previous gov’t aristocracy and end of feudalism. “Clearing the bush” mass
murder on Tutsis.
Organization- Hutus formed a campaign to wage against the Tutsis. Guy changed the
gov’t in order to help the Hutus. He said that the previous gov’t was wrong and that he
will set up a democracy, however, he actually setup a Hutu dictatorship. Mini groups of
Tutsis began to form guerrilla groups. But were easily defeated.
Polarization- Hutus attacked Tutsis leaders after a beating was done to the Hutu political
activist. Then the new leader quickly took out all of the Tutsi leaders and replaced them.
Tutsis tried to counter a revolt but failed and Kayibanda ordered for Tutsis to die. Over
14,000 Tutsis were killed in one week. All Tutsis were enemies and any Hutus that did
not agree.
Preparation- Identity cards were given to everyone to tell the difference between groups.
To help stop the revolts Tutsis homes were burned and thousands of Tutsis were exiled to
other countries. Raised taxes to force more people into poverty. Hutus jobs were to kill
all the Tutsi neighbors.
Extermination- RPF which was what the group called themselves had decided to
manipulate the U.N. into helping them. Eventually over a matter of weeks millions of
Tutsis were slaughtered.
