AS Textiles Induction week / Summer tasks 2014
AS Textiles is 50% coursework & 50% exam. The coursework takes the form of a portfolio of
work showing a range of folder & practical work from several different projects.
The tasks you do now will be included in your portfolio.
Task 1
Context – ‘Textiles & the Environment’
Brief – Using a range of resources, techniques & materials, recycle a T shirt into a ‘new’
garment. Record your work on 1-2 sheets of A3 paper & include information relating to the
environmental impact of the Textiles industry & designers / companies which manufacture
products from recycled materials - & photographs of your completed T shirt.

Task 2
Context -‘History of Fashion Research Project’
Research the fashions & iconic styles of each decade of the 20th Century. For each decade you
should collate images of the main fashion silhouettes, information on the work of designers in that
decade & include any technological inventions which affected the fashions eg; the invention of
Nylon / space travel in the 1960s. You should also make brief reference to any events which changed
society & affected the fashions of the day.
This work should be presented on 2 pages of A3 paper. The pages should include images &
text & be carefully presented to go into your portfolio. It could be in the form of a time line.

Task 3
Context; ‘Use a commercial pattern to develop a shirt suitable for a chosen celebrity. ‘
Specification; The shirt must be made from 2 different fabrics & at least 2 alterations must
be made to the commercial pattern.
In September you will be working on the ‘Celebrity Shirt Project’. In preparation for this you
need to choose a celebrity, research & collect images of their ‘signature style’ & buy a
commercial pattern ready to use in September to make the shirt. (You do not need to do
anything else for this project yet and please… NO BURDA PATTERNS).
All work must be completed for WB 1st September 2014.
If you do not make these deadlines you may be considered unsuitable for this course and
your place may be jeopardised.
