(Done) Being in the condition of darkness, what do you most desire? CDT Light. WM Brethren, assist me in bringing the cdt from darkness to light by which Masons work. (All places the hands as in due-guard of EAM.) (WM about face and midway between east and the altar turn facing the cdt. Remove the hat while reciting the foregoing passage) “ In the beginning God created the heaven ans the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said. Let there be light; and there was light” (Replace the hat, goes to altar while repeating the next sentence, and so time reaching near the altar as the work “I” is uttered, pointing to the great lights with the right hand) In humble commemoration of that august event, I now Masonically say: “ Let there be light.” ( all clap once) The first object presented to your view, on being brought from darkness, are the three Great Light of Masonry, The Holy Bible, square and compasses. The Holy Bible is given to us as the rule and guide of our faith;and the compasses to circumscribe our desire and keep our passion within due bound toward all mankind. This you are the better enable to observe by aid of three lesser lights representing (point) the Sun, Moon and master of the Lodge. As the sun rules the day and the moon governs the night, so should the WM endeavor, with equal regularities to rule and govern the Lodge over which he is called to preside. (WM goes to east, about face and midway between east and altar, turn facing the cdt. - Lights on) You now observe me as the master of the Lodge approaching you from the east under the due-guard and sign of an EAM.(advance as EAM and give the due-guard and sign.) (sit down) (The cdt is conducted to the east without order.) WM (rise) I now take pleasure in presenting to you this lamb skin. It is an emblem of innocence and the badge of Mason. More ancient than the Golden Fleece or the Roman Eagle, More honorable then the Star and Garter, or any distinction that can be conferred upon you, at this or any future period, by King, Prince,Potentate or any other person It may be that in the coming years, upon your head shall rest the laurel wreath of victory, upon your breast nay hang jewels fit to grace the diadem of an eastern potentate; nay more than these, with light added to the coming light, your ambitious feet may tread around after around the ladder that leads to fame in our mystic circle and even the purple of our fraternity may rest upon your honored shoulder. But never again from mortals hands, never again until your enfranchised spirit shall passed upward and inward through the early gates shall any honor so distinguished. So emblematical of purity and all perfections, be bestowed upon you as this which I now confer. It is yours – your name is written upon it – yours to wear throughout an honorable life and at your death to be placed upon the coffin which shall contain your earthly remains and with them laid beneath the silent clods of the valley. Let its pure and spotless surface be to you an ever-present reminder of an emblematical or emblemished purity of life and rectitude of conduct, a never-ending argument for nobler deeds, for higher thoughts, for purer actions, and for greater achievement s. and when at last your weary toilsome journey, and from your nerveless grasp shall drop forever the working tools of life, may the record of your life and action be as pure and spotless as this fair emblem which I now place in your hand (hand it). And when your trembling soul shall stand naked and alone before the Great White Throne, there to receive judgment for th deed done while in the body, may it be your portion to hear from HIM who sitteth as the Judge Supreme, the welcome words, “ well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” It is hoped, my brother, that you will wear that apron with pleasure to yourself and honor to the fraternity. CDT (Accompanied by the SD, advance, receive the apron and back to former position) WM (sit down) You will now be reconducted to the SW in the West, who will teach you to wear your apron as an EAM. SD (Conduct the cdt toward the west by way of south; when one step west of the altar, right face and advance toward west to within 3 feet of the border of the pavement, in front of the SW station and stop; take one step to the north but not back; place the rod at attention.) Brother SW (rise) it is the order of the WM that you teach the cdt to wear his apron as an EAM. SW (Comes down, walk toward the cdt , take the apron from him and tie it) Masonic tradition inform us that at the building of King Solomon's Temple the craft were distinguished by the manner in which they wore their aprons. Entered Apprentices, being bearers of burden, wore theirs with top turned up (illustrate), to protect their clothing from becoming soiled. As an EAM, you will thus wear yours. (return to Station) You will now be reconducted to the WM in the east for further instructions. (sit down) SD (Conduct the cdt to east by way of North, stop in front of the WM, take one step to south and one back, rod at attention) WM (Rise) Having the pleasure of seeing you for the first time clad in the habiliment of a Mason, I now present to you the working tools of this degree. They are the twenty-four inch gauge and common gavel. The Twenty-four inch gauge Is an instrument made use of by operative Masons to measure and lay out their work. But we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of dividing out time. It, being divided into twenty-four equal parts, is emblematic of the twenty-four hours of the day, which we are taught to divide inti three parts, whereby we find a part for the service of God and a distressed worthy brother; a part for usual vocations; and a part for refreshment and repose The common Gavel Is an instrument used by operative masons to break off the rough and superfluous part of stones, the better to fit them for the builders use. But we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of divesting our hearts and conscience of all the vices and superfluities of life; thereby fitting our minds, as a living stones for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. WM (sit down) It has been the custom among the fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons from time immemorial, at the initiation of a cdt, to demand that he deposit some mineral or metallic substance, not for intrinsic value, but that it may be placed in the archives of the Lodge as testimony that he was then and there made a Mason. I now make this demand of you. Will you make a deposit? CDT I will WM Anything you may have about you, of a mineral or metallic nature, which you can deposit with out brother the Secretary? CDT I have nothing WM Do find yourself entirely destitute? DCT I do WM So I expected to find you. Had it been otherwise, you would not have been duly and truly prepared. Nor was this demand made to trifle with your person or feelings, but to teach you an important lesson; that should you ever meet a friend, particularly a worthy bother mason, in as destitute a condition as that in which you now stand, it will be your indispensable duty to relieve him so far as you can do so, without serious injury to yourself. You will now be reconducted to the place whence you came, invested with that of which you were divested, and in due time return to the Lodge. SD (Conduct the cdt to the Altar by way of south. Stewards rise and take the rods when the SD turns. JS goes directly to the altar. SD with cdt following, SS is the last. WM That (sign) my brother, you will give on entering or retiring from a Lodge of EAM, and when addressing the WM in the east. SD,SS,JD,CDT (Left face and go to the preparation room in the following order JS,SD with CDT and SS. JS open door with right hand, SS take CDT, SD close the door with right hand, goes back to his place, put rod in the stand and sit down) WM The brethren may consider themselves free from restrain until the sound of the gavel in the east.
