COURSE TITLE: Introduction to General Psychology II. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES: A broad survey of the major topics in psychology including but not limited to, research methodology, biological and social factors influencing behavior, development, learning, memory, personality, and abnormal psychology. III. REQUIRED TEXT: Psychology: Themes and Variations, 6th Edition, by Wayne Weiten, Thomson/Wadsworth Publishing IV. GENERAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS: CLASS ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED and will count toward your grade in this course. I recommend that you keep a notebook for this course, in which you keep the course syllabus (that would be this handout), class handouts, class exercises, and class notes. This notebook will be an invaluable asset when studying for tests. V. GRADING: There will be 5 exams: 4 exams and 1 cumulative final exam. All exams will be in a multiple choice format. There will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. The lowest exam grade will be dropped. Each exam will count for 15% of your grade. The final will count for 20% of your grade. You are expected to bring a green scan-tron (which can be purchased at the bookstore) and a pencil to each exam. If you fail to do so, you will not be permitted to take the exam. You will be required to complete two projects outlined separately in the syllabus. Each project will count for 15% of your grade. One project will be due at the midpoint of the term with the other exam being due at the end of the term. Late projects will be excepted, however, 5 points will be deducted from your grade for each class period that the project is late. Grades will be computed as follows: Class participation: Three best exams: Final: Midpoint Project : Final Project: 5% 45% 20% 15% 15% Page 1 Georgia Perimeter College Psychology 1101 Syllabus The grading scale below will be used to determine your final grade. AVERAGE 90 - 100 80 - 89 70 - 79 60 - 69 BELOW 60 GRADE A B C D F VI. ABSENCE/WITHDRAWAL POLICY: You are expected to attend all classes. Missed classes count as absences even if you were not yet registered for this class. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL MATERIAL COVERED, EVEN IF YOU ARE ABSENT. You will receive a grade of zero (0) for attendance/class participation on days you are absent. These attendance/class participation points cannot be made up. Only two planned absences are permitted and I must be notified of these absences in advance. Please notify me immediately following an unplanned absence from class. Failure to do so will count against your grade. TARDY ARRIVAL/EARLY DEPARTURE POLICY: You are expected to arrive ON TIME for each class and to remain until class is dismissed. Late arrivals (and early departures) disrupt the class and distract everyone, including me. If you should arrive late, please enter quietly and take your seat as unobtrusively as possible. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class. If you arrive after attendance has been taken, it is your responsibility to notify me that you are present at a break or at the end of class. If you arrive more than 1/2 hour late or leave more than 1/2 hour early, this will be counted as an absence. The syllabus and any relevant course materials (e.g. handouts) will be post on the web page listed at the beginning of the syllabus. You are responsible for obtaining these handouts from the website if you are absent from class. Copies of the handouts will only be brought to class the day they are initially handed out to students. Please turn off/silence all cell phones, pagers, and electronic devices prior to the beginning of class. If you fail to do so and class is disrupted by your electronic device, you may be asked to leave the class. VII. CHEATING/PLAGIARISM POLICY: Cheating is against school policy. Cheating includes any attempt to defraud, deceive, or mislead the instructor in arriving at an honest grade assessment, and may include copying answers from other students or using unauthorized notes during tests. Plagiarism is a particular form of cheating that involves presenting as one's own the ideas or work of another, and may include using other people's ideas without proper attribution and submitting another person's work as one's own. Violations of the cheating policy will result in a grade of '0' for the assignment in question, and may result in a failing grade for the course at the instructor's discretion. See the Student Conduct Code in the Student Handbook for details and for a review of the appeals procedure. Additional information related to Academic Honesty as it applies to courses taken in the Department of Social Sciences on the Dunwoody Campus may be found on our website at http://www.gpc.edu/~bbrown/socialsciences/academichonesty.htm.
