Questions
1. This is almost exactly the middle of the play, and everything flips around.
It’s as if Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have switched roles.
For example, we see Lady Macbeth saying the following lines:
Lady Macbeth:
Nought's had, all's spent,
Where our desire is got without content:
a) meaning :

and:
'Tis safer to be that which we destroy
Than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy.
b) meaning:
And then we see Macbeth saying:
Macbeth:
we Must lave our honours in these flattering streams,
And make our faces vizards to our hearts,
Disguising what they are.
c) meaning:
d) which reminds us of the lines in Act 1, scene 5, when Lady Macbeth said:
2. Finally, this scene is important because it shows us another change in Macbeth’s relationship with Lady Macbeth.

LADY MACBETH
What's to be done?
MACBETH

Till thou applaud the deed.

_____________________________. Lady Macbeth is so concerned that she ___
______________________________________. Macbeth reveals that he is angry with _______________ and that
he plans to visit _____________ to find out what will happen next.
1.
Although Macbeth is upset that Fleance wasn’t killed, he rationalizes that he doesn’t need to worry about it
yet with the following lines.
Macbeth:
There the grown serpent lies; the worm that's fled
Hath nature that in time will venom breed,
No teeth for the present.
Why is Macbeth not worried?
2. LADY MACBETH
O proper stuff!
This is the very painting of your fear:
This is the air-drawn dagger which, you said,
Led you to Duncan.
When Lady Macbeth hears Macbeth anting about Banquo’s ghost, she is reminded about
another strange vision Macbeth once had. Of what is she reminded?
3. Put the following lines in your own words:
Macbeth:
the times have been,
That, when the brains were out, the man would die,
And there an end; but now they rise again,
With twenty mortal murders on their crowns,
And push us from our stools:
4. I think this line is really, really cool. Macbeth asks what time it is:
What is the night?
and then Lady Macbeth replies:

LADY MACBETH
Almost at odds with morning, which is which.
meaning, the night and morning are fighting. It’s right in the middle, between night and day, impossible to say
which is which. Why are these lines cool?
Well, we’re still in the middle of the play. We’ve come so far into the NIGHT of Macbeth’s SOUL. Is he going to
go forward or back? Which will win, good or evil?
No question here. Just wanted you to notice that.
Let’s find out what happens.
5.
MACBETH
How say'st thou, that Macduff denies his person
At our great bidding?
LADY MACBETH
Did you send to him, sir?
MACBETH
I hear it by the way; but I will send:
There's not a one of them but in his house
I keep a servant fee'd.
We find out here that Macduff __________ to come when Macbeth asked him to.
We also find out that Macbeth keeps _____________ in all of the houses of his Thanes. This shows that he doesn’t
_____________ any of them.
6.
I am in blood
Stepp'd in so far that, should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er:
meaning:
I am steeped (like a tea bag in hot water) in so much blood, that it is just as tedious to go back as it is to go on.
a) Which will win, good or evil? Will Macbeth stop and repent or go on and do more evil?
7. Macbeth says:
Strange things I have in head, that will to hand;
Which must be acted ere they may be scann'd.
meaning:

Question
Put these lines in your own words:
There hangs a vaporous drop profound;
I'll catch it ere it come to ground:
And that distill'd by magic sleights
Shall raise such artificial sprites
As by the strength of their illusion
Shall draw him on to his confusion:
He shall spurn fate, scorn death, and bear
He hopes 'bove wisdom, grace and fear:
And you all know, security
Is mortals' chiefest enemy.
