Jose Fernandez – Director of Bands
1
Dear Pioneer Band Members and Parents,
Welcome to the Oak Ridge High School Band Program. Congratulations on continuing a tradition of
excellence. Whether or not you are interested in a career in music, the instruction you will receive in this
program will prepare you to be successful in your future activities – musical and other. More importantly,
you will be able to improve yourself and your musical expression. The Oak Ridge High School Band
Program will strive to help you improve your practice and study habits, while always leaving time for
yourself, your loved ones, and other extra-curricular activities.
The Pioneer Band gives you the ability to achieve and progress as individuals and together as a band. This
gives us the ability to organize ourselves and achieve our goals. Each member learns to rely on one another
for musical standards, strong character, and a sense of responsibility to our ensemble.
The intent of this handbook is to render valuable information about the Band Program at Oak Ridge High
School. The Oak Ridge High School Band features a Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band,
Beginning Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Indoor Drumline, Color Guard, Winter Guard, and the
Pioneer Marching Band. We have tried to cover every aspect of the program. Each student and parent is
responsible for knowing the information from the handbook.
The Pioneer Handbook describes the fundamental aspects of the Oak Ridge High School Band Program.
The handbook includes specific descriptions of the expectations that all Oak Ridge High School band
members utilize during rehearsals and performances. To be a successful member, each student should
thoroughly study this manual, and understand each topic discussed.
We have many things planned for this year, and your participation is important to our success. Take
everything in this handbook seriously because understanding these things will be key to our success this
year. Again, get ready for a great year.
Mr. Jose Fernandez
Director of Bands

Section 2: Membership
Philosophy and Tradition
The Oak Ridge High School Band is committed to maintaining a tradition of excellence. As a member of
this organization, you take on the responsibility of continuing our legacy through commitment,
determination, and hard work.
The Oak Ridge High School Band program is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for its
students in the performing arts. All educational activities will take place in an environment that promotes
social and inventive development of the students through creative programs. In addition, it is our belief that
the process is just as important as the product. This means that you learn while you work, not when the
process is over.
Membership Requirements
Rules for eligibility in all band functions are set forth by the Orange County School Board. All students
must maintain a 2.0 GPA during the previous marking period. These are minimum requirements, and
most students will exceed them with ease; however, it is important to remember that one ineligible student
can lower the performance level of the band by his/her absence.
Band courses in Orange County are performance based, and the music being performed is not rehearsed
primarily during class time. Students are assessed based on their ability to perform the literature in a
satisfactory manner. The State Department of Education state course descriptions includes the following
statement: “Special Note: This course generally requires students to participate in extra rehearsals and
performances beyond the school day”. In addition, OCPS Course Descriptions for High School Band I
through VI state the following: “As a performance oriented activity, attendance is required for rehearsals
and performances beyond regular school hours.”
Attitude
You MUST have a POSITIVE attitude to be a productive member of The Oak Ridge High School Band.
Attitude always comes before individual skills. If your attitude is not positive or you are not doing your
personal best, you will not be a part of our distinct organization. If your attitude is not positive and
cooperative, you will be given the opportunity to change or leave the organization. Those who have pride in
themselves will project a positive attitude. Remember, you chose to become a member of the Pioneer Band
Program, so you should always keep a positive attitude.
School Attendance, Academics & Conduct
Your main priority is to be a productive student of Oak Ridge High School. This includes having good
attendance, performing in the classroom, as well as having good conduct. Band students are exemplary
members of our school and you will be held to high standards. You are not allowed to participate in any
band activities if you have an unexcused absence from school on that day. You must perform in the
classroom academically and you must also demonstrate good behavior.
Pioneer Marching Band
The Pioneer Marching Band is an integral part of the fall season. From supporting the football team to
participating in the marching music performance assessment & competitions, the Pioneer Band keeps busy
AND productive. The Band will perform at football games, contests, parades, and other performance
opportunities in the area. Membership in the Pioneer Band requires that students: 1) attend all rehearsals
and performances; and 2) be enrolled in the band class offered at Oak Ridge High School 3) comply with
all rules and regulations for the Pioneer Band program.
If you miss 30 minutes or more of rehearsal during the week, you will not be allowed to participate with the
band for that performance. Any exceptions to this rule must be discussed and approved by Mr. Eaddy at
least two weeks in advance. In addition, any student that misses the final run through for any reason
will not be allowed to participate with the band for that performance. There will be no exceptions to this
rule.
*Please be aware that although students will not be able to march in the above mentioned situation,
they are still required to attend the performance!
3
Participation in marching band is a requirement of all students enrolled in High School band courses
within the Orange County Public Schools. The following exemptions are available in the following
categories and must be approved by Mr. Eaddy:
 Medical conditions that preclude the student’s ability to march, or participate in a non-marching
role ( such as performing in the football stadium stands during a sporting event, or at a pep rally;
performing in a wheelchair or sitting position in the “pit sideline ensemble”)
 Religious conflicts with calendar holidays; or participation in marching band, or a marching event,
that is a contradiction to the beliefs of the individual’s, or family’s, religion
 Extraordinary Circumstances which would prohibit the student from participation in marching
band
Ensembles
*The Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band & Percussion Ensemble is a full year class and is open to students
in the 9th-12th grade who have at least two years previous instruction in wind and/or percussion instruments.
It consists of modern band instrumentation and provides instruction in advanced instrumental skills such as
instrumental technique, small ensemble performance, solo performance as well as an emphasis on
fundamental concepts of rhythm, tone production, ensemble balance and blend, and overall ensemble
sonority. The CONCERT BANDS is a class that meets every school day and performs several concerts and
festivals each year. The student agrees to attend all after-school rehearsals, sectionals, and
performances. (Exceptions are only through advance director approval). Private study is strongly
encouraged. Members are expected to practice 30 minutes a day at home.
*The BEGINNING BAND is a full year class and is open to students in the 9th-12th grade who have had
little or no experience in instrumental instruction. All students will choose wind instruments with the aid of
the director; selected students will be allowed to switch to percussion by the end of several weeks of
instruction. Basic concepts such as proper embouchure, hand position, listening skills, and breathing skills
will be emphasized. The BEGINNING BAND is a class that meets every school day and will perform in
concerts throughout the year. The student agrees to attend all after-school rehearsals and
performances. Private study is strongly encouraged. Members are expected to practice 30 minutes a day at
home.
*The Pioneer Jazz Ensemble is a select group of students with membership through audition only. The
student agrees to attend all after-school rehearsals, sectionals, and performances. (Exceptions only
through advance director approval). The goal of the Jazz Band is to continue to introduce students to jazz
and jazz history through the performance of various styles of jazz.
***Any student who drops out of any of these organizations during the school term will be required to drop
that class as soon as possible. If you drop out of one of the programs, you will not be allowed to rejoin
without Director approval.***
Band Office
The Band office at Oak Ridge High School is the business office for the Band Director and Band Boosters.
The band office is OFF LIMITS to students unless given permission by the Director. All rehearsal times
are published well in advance. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Band Office at
(407) 852-3200 ext.6102349 and leave a message on the voice mail. You can also stop in before or after
(NOT DURING) rehearsal and talk to the Director.
Telephone Usage
The phone will be available for calls for rides AFTER rehearsal. The phone is not to be used for personal
reasons. If you are caught using the phone for personal use, you will give up your right to use the phone.
Attendance
Band practices and performances are mandatory. Any request for an absence must be submitted in
writing from the parent or guardian, and approved by the Director TWO WEEKS in advance of the
date, except in the case of emergencies. Our schedule is always announced far enough in advance to
avoid conflicts. Students will NOT be allowed to participate in Marching/Concert Band if they have two
unexcused absences in each season. Parents, please make every effort to schedule regular doctor's
appointments around the band’s schedule whenever possible. Students are responsible for arriving at each
rehearsal and performance on time and properly prepared (instrument and music ready). Parents are urged
to see that their children take this responsibility seriously. In the case of emergency or illness, students are
asked to call the Band office as early as possible so that substitutions or replacements can be made. A
written excuse from the parent or guardian is due the day after the absence. Please understand that work is
4
not an excusable absence. Please arrange your work schedule so that it allows you to attend all rehearsals,
performances, and out of town trips. Work is not an acceptable excuse for missing any band event.
Excusable absences are:
Sickness
Death in the family
Important family engagement
Religious Holiday
Inexcusable absences:
Health Appointments
Family Holidays
Club meeting w/o director
notification
Work
Couldn’t get a ride
Didn’t know about it
Forgot my instrument
Parents made me stay home
Teacher made me stay after
Class
Unexcused School Absences
All other items not listed as
excused
***The director makes the final decision on excused absences.***
***On your 2nd unexcused absence you will not participate in the (Marching/Concert Band)
Absence from Performances
Performances are essential to the success of the band. One student being absent can turn a potentially
excellent performance into a mediocre event. The director must approve absences two weeks in advance.
Any absence that is not brought to the director’s attention for approval prior to that time will be considered
unexcused. Unexcused absences from performances will result in that student not being allowed to
participate in any future Band events and will result in the student’s grade being lowered. Please
keep in mind that performances count as 40% of your grade per nine weeks.
Absence from Football Games, MPA’s & Competitions
If you miss a football game, MPA or a competition for an unexcused reason, you will be dismissed
from the program. NO EXCUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
Fundraising
There will be more than enough fundraisers available for you and your family to help raise funds for the
band. Money raised during fundraisers can be used to pay for instrument repair, musical accessories, end of
the year banquet, and anything else deemed necessary by the director. We need parent support to help make
our fundraisers successful.
Band Fairshare 2015-2016
In order to effectively serve you, there is a Band Fairshare Assessment for each student. While we are very fortunate to
have a supportive administration that supplies some of the band’s needs, students need to contribute also.
The Band Fairshare Assessment covers most of the operating costs of the Pioneer Band. The assessment pays for staff
members, competition & performance fees, a Pioneer Band T-Shirt, assessment fees for festivals, costs for all music
performed, awards, and many other items too numerous to list.
The Band Fairshare Assessment for the 2015-2016 school year is $250. Please do not let the fairshare discourage
your participation in the band. There will be MANY fundraising opportunities to help you raise the money if
you so choose. The following table shows when payments must be made. Please see me if you need other
arrangements.
The Band Fairshare does not include travel to competitions & assessments.

cooperation and support.
Section 3: Structure
Code of Conduct
The band members in our program are ambassadors of our school, district, and community. We expect all
band members to conduct themselves properly at all times. All band students are responsible for the
reading of and adherence to the ORANGE COUNTY CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT. Here are some
straight forward rules about conduct in the Band Room, and when representing Oak Ridge High School as
a member of the Oak Ridge Band.
General Band Rules
ABOVE ALL ELSE – HONESTY!
Be in your seat, warmed up, and ready to begin on time.
GUM, food or drinks WILL NOT BE TOLERATED in the Band Room.
Loud, boisterous behavior is inappropriate in the Band Room.
Come with a positive attitude when you enter the band room.
Respect other people’s property. “IF IT IS NOT YOURS, DON’T TOUCH IT!”
Public display of affection is not allowed while on "band time.”
NEVER disrespect another band or its members, ever!
This is essentially our home. We WILL keep it clean and have it be a pleasant place to share the
joy of music.
10. Remember the golden rule, “ALWAYS TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED!”
11. Show respect to all directors, administrators, teachers, substitutes, parents, chaperones, and guests
at all times.
12. The use of obscene language or gestures is behavior unbecoming of an Oak Ridge High School
Band member and will be addressed immediately.
13. Remember you are a class act. Do not do anything that would have to be explained. Always
conduct yourselves as ladies and gentlemen.
14. Class will end upon dismissal by Director, not when the bell sounds.
Passes – Students must present planners and I.D. Cards to be allowed out of class for any reason.

Classroom Procedures
You MUST be in place (instrument together with a PENCIL) two minutes after the tardy bell sounds or
you will be marked tardy. When the bell rings, there will be silence in the room. Warm-up is crucial time
because it is where you focus on the fundamentals so we can blend as a group. Brass players should have
necessary mutes and woodwinds should have an extra reed to carry with them. Percussionists should have
everything that they need in place before the rehearsal.
During rehearsal, cases should be left in your locker. The cases are unnecessary obstructions in the
rehearsal area. At the end of the rehearsal the instruments will be put back into your locker until it is time to
go home. At the end of the rehearsal, ALL of the percussion equipment will be put back. Problems of an
individual nature (music missing, instrument problem, etc...) will not take class time. These issues will be
dealt with either before school, after school, or just before class as a last resort.
Talking during rehearsals will be kept to a minimum. Any necessary talking should be about the music we
are studying and should never be a distraction to the conductor or other students. When the conductor is
on the podium, there is no talking. When the conductor steps off the podium you may talk quietly if at all
necessary.
***The Director has a right to change classroom procedures at anytime***
Football Game Procedures
1. Our home football games will be played at the Oak Ridge High School stadium.
2. All games will begin at 7:30* with band report time posted for each game. (*Subject to change.)
3. Students will check out & return their uniform for each performance.
4. Percussion instruments, color guard equipment, tubas, and other large equipment need to be
loaded early for away games.

16.
All band instruments and equipment must be sparkling and “ready to go” for inspection.
Thursday after practice all brass instruments will be polished.
No band member is permitted to leave the organization in advance of group dismissal at any time,
unless excused by the Director. (A note from parents is needed.)
While seated in the stands, only band members are allowed in the ranks. Alumni who may return
from time to time are always welcome, but will not be allowed to sit within the ranks of the band
while in the stands.
While seated in the stands, the band will always sit in sections, according to the seating chart.
We will play only as a group while in the stands. Solo performance is strictly forbidden.
No inappropriate cheers are allowed.
Musicians should avoid jumping as the team scores a touchdown. We appreciate the enthusiasm,
but instruments may get damaged in the process.
In order to move in an organized fashion, we must be able to give instructions in a rapid manner.
Everyone will listen to the band director, band staff, and drum major when instructions are given.
There will be no 3rd quarter break to prevent students from eating in the uniform. There will be
food available before call time at your expense.
Weekly details will be assigned on a rotating basis to help load for away games and help clean the
band room after games.
The band will march to the stadium and back from the stadium at all home games. Once we have
returned to the band room, students will wait at attention for dismissal by the band director.
All performances are mandatory. If you are unable to attend a performance, you must provide a
written excuse 2 weeks in advance. Personal illness, death in the family, weddings, and religious
holidays are usually the only legitimate excuses for missing rehearsals or performances.
Classroom Discipline
1st offense – Conference/Warning
2nd offense - Parent Contact
3rd offense – Detention/Work Detail
4th offense – Discipline Referral
*Parent contact may be coupled with any consequence.
**Severity of infractions can result in more sever consequences.

on the podium!
Each student will be seated with music, instrument, and pencil at the designated time

grade.
Students will sit with correct posture. There will be no crossed legs, slumping in the
chair, or leaning on the backs of the chair.

Music folders, instruments, and equipment should be kept in their proper places when not
in use. DO NOT LEAVE MUSIC FOLDERS ON MUSIC STANDS!!!

trash should be thrown in the wastebasket.
Students will not bring book bags, personal belongings or study materials to their
seats. During class leave them in your locker or on the bookcase.
Please make arrangements beforehand to be picked up after rehearsals or performances.
After School Rehearsals
After school rehearsals will be announced well in advance. Problems with transportation, conflicts with
family plans, etc., should be resolved by the student and Director 2 weeks in advance.
Communication
If you need to communicate with Mr. Fernandez please use his school phone (407-852-3200 ext. 6108126)
and email (jose.fernandez@ocps.net). If you call and there is no answer, please leave a voicemail message.
7
He will not respond to Band related business via his personal phone (call or text) or any social media.
Performances
Band classes are performance-oriented classes, so all students are required to be in attendance and
participate in all performances. Although letters are sent home informing and inviting parents and
friends to school performances, it is the student’s responsibility to keep their parents or guardian
informed of all band activities.
Bus Etiquette:
1. You must use headphones with stereos/radios.
2. Stay seated at all times.
3. If you bring food and drinks, please do no litter.
4. Pay attention during announcements and roll check.
5. Keep everything inside the bus -- nothing is to be put out of the windows.
6. Do not open the emergency door while the bus is in motion.
7. Be extra polite to chaperones!!! They are in charge!

Guest Conductors/Instructors
We will frequently have Guest Conductors/Instructors coming into work with our band. They are
professionals that are an essential part of the band program. Without their help the Pioneer Band will not be
able to achieve the success that we strive for. Students should give the staff the same respect that is given
to the director.
Bulletin Boards/Marker Boards
Check the bulletin board daily for important information. This is our primary means of communication.
There is a special board set aside for music camps and other musical activities. Make yourself aware; you
are responsible for the information posted.
Band Lockers
Each Band student will be issued a Band locker. Some students may have to share a locker. The school
is not responsible for items left in band lockers; therefore, students are advised to take their
instruments and personal items home every afternoon after school. Only band materials are to be kept in the
locker. Lockers are property of Orange County Public Schools. Random locker checks are conducted. Keep
your lock closed at all times. If the locks are not turned in at the end of the year, you will be charged a $10
replacement fee.
*If you have food or any other items in your lockers that are not permitted, you will loose your
locker privilege.
Instrument/Supplies/Repairs
Normally, the Band does not provide instruments for students; however, there are exceptions to this rule.
Oak Ridge High School checks out instruments to individual students on a first come-first served basis.
Parents/Students who are issued school owned instruments will sign a Responsibility Form/Contract and
will be responsible for damage to the instrument. Any damage other than normal wear and tear will be
repaired at the student’s expense. Individual instruments must always be maintained in top playing
condition.
8
There is a $50 maintenance assessment for school owned instruments.
Students using school owned instruments will also need to purchase their own mouthpieces and other
accessories as needed. All supplies are available from area music stores. Supplies such as reeds, oil, cork
grease, and swabs may be purchased from area music stores. Students who need to purchase accessories at
Oak Ridge may do so before school. Plan ahead and make sure to have the correct materials on hand, so
that when emergencies happen, you only need to reach into your case. There is no excuse for needing to
buy a new reed the night of the concert.
Brass players are expected to have valve or slide oil, mouthpiece brush and tuning slide grease on hand at
all times. Woodwind players should always have a reed guard, four good reeds, swab, and cork grease.
Percussionists will be responsible for their own snare drum pads, drumsticks, and mallets for bells and
timpani.
Always show the director your instrument before taking it in for repairs. Mr. Eaddy may be able to fix your
instrument, and his price is free. Remember that horseplay can cause damage to instruments and
equipment. Be careful with your own instrument, place it out of harm's way if it is necessary for you to put
it down, and never play around with or play on anyone else's instrument. There will be a mouthpiece puller
in the band office if needed.
“The Orange County School System does not have insurance or
any other plan that will cover damage, theft, or loss of privately
owned equipment. If that equipment is to be covered, it must be
through the parent’s personal insurance, such as homeowner’s
policy, etc.”

Tenor Saxophone/ Bass Clarinet Reeds $5
Baritone Saxophone Reeds $8

Music Care





Do not fold or tear the music. (ALWAYS USE A PENCIL, NEVER INK)
If you are sharing music, and you are absent that day, you are still responsible to have the music at
the rehearsal or performance.
Students will be charged for the music that is lost or not cared for properly.
Students should not take individual music parts out of the folder. The entire folder should be
checked out.
Students needing a music part should fill out a music request form and place it in the librarians’
box in the band room.
Lost/Stolen Music
Music is issued to each student. This is the band “textbook”. Each student is responsible for his/her music.
If music must be replaced because it has been lost/stolen, the student is expected to pay for the
replacement. The cost to replace music is $5.00 per page for concert (full page) sized music or $1.00 per
page for marching/copied music.
Band Trips
First, YOU ARE REPRESENTING OAK RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL!!! Horseplay and screaming are
prohibited on the bus. Stay seated; no arms out of the windows – Oak Ridge Bus Rules Apply. Students
may not change buses without permission. Roll will be checked on each bus before departure. Students are
responsible for their own instruments and music. DO NOT FORGET ANYTHING! Always triple check
9
your belongings before we leave the school to make sure that everything is there.
If a student wishes to ride home with their parent or guardian, they must provide the director with a
written request at least three days in advance of the trip. If approved, that parent or guardian must
appear in person to pick up the student from the director (This does not include, brother, sister, etc).
Band Awards Banquet
Every year in May, the Band Officers recognize the achievements of the band, its members, parents, and
administration.
Uniform Information
Marching Band UniformUniforms will be checked out to students before every performance and returned that evening. It is
mandatory to wear the uniform properly in public. The schako must be worn on the head with the brim
directly above the eyebrows. All buttons and zippers should be properly fastened at all times. The trousers
are made to be worn high on the waist and the suspenders should be adjusted for your height. The correct
band t-shirt, long black socks and black band shoes must be worn with the uniform. (If you do not have
the correct band shirt on, you will not get your uniform). Any damage due to mistreatment or improper
care of the uniform will be the responsibility of the student and parents. Students are fitted as closely as
possible. The band will provide all alterations that are needed.
Concert Band Uniform
Everyone – BLACK Concert Dress Shirt, BLACK Pants and Dark Tie (optional), Long Black Dress Socks
and Black Dress Shoes.
***Girls are not permitted to wear fitted dress pants, dresses, or skirts***
If you fail to wear the proper attire, points will be deducted from your concert grade, or you will not
be able to perform.
Jazz Band – Black Pants and Dark Colored Shirt
Percussion Ensemble – All Black
For every uniform there is NO JEWELRY ALLOWED!!! (This includes Concerts)
***We are not responsible for providing items to cover your new piercings***
***No Fingernail Polish (This includes concerts)
Inspections
Uniform and instrument inspections will be held prior to each uniformed performance. The Drum Major
and other student leaders will be responsible for the inspections and will report directly to the band director.
All problems noted during inspection will be reported to the director, who will determine whether or not
the student will be allowed to perform. All minor problems will be recorded and will affect the student’s
grade for that performance. If a student is not allowed to perform, however, the student will receive no
credit for that performance and make-up will not be permitted. After the inspection, students may borrow
or rent items from the uniform room if they are available. These items must be promptly returned
following the performance.
When you are representing the Oak Ridge High School Band in any way (any performances, in other
classes, etc), you are to be professional at all times.
Private Lessons
Private lessons are key in producing a top musical ensemble. Students who study their instruments with
professionals show much more improvement in musicianship and other categories. As you continue to take
lessons, you will continue to improve. If you need help in choosing a private instructor, ask the director.
Private lessons are the key to excellence on your instrument.
MARCHING BAND/CONCERT MUSIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
Festivals are important features of the Pioneer Band program. These activities give us valuable feedback
about our progress as individuals and as a whole. Although we never "live or die" by any judge or panel’s
opinion of our performance, it is important that we learn the value of giving maximum effort and standing
by the results.
10
The Pioneer Marching Band/Wind Ensemble will perform in the Music Performance Assessment,
sponsored by the Florida Bandmasters Association. This performance will be evaluated by three highly
qualified judges and rated on a musical scale from Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor. After the
concert performance, the band will then go to another room and be evaluated on their ability to sight-read
music they have never seen by a fourth judge using the same rating scale.
This is a valuable experience for many musical reasons and takes place in October/March each year. Each
student in the band must thoroughly prepare for this performance since the whole Band is evaluated.
Obviously a Superior rating is the ultimate goal, although the experience of Marching Band/Concert
Festival is not built on a rating but rather on musical goals. No matter what the outcome of the
performance, you will always do your personal best while “Staying in stride, and always living up to
Pioneer Pride.”
The Band’s image is based on each individual. Our public reputation is based upon our appearance, our
actions, and our projection of pride. It is the responsibility of each band member to insure that we present
the best possible image at all times.
ALL-STATE
The ALL-STATE BAND and ORCHESTRA are ensembles created by an audition process, from some of
the finest musicians in the State of Florida. Auditions are held locally each year during the latter half of
September. Rehearsals and performances are held during the Florida Music Educators Convention in early
January in Tampa. Participation in the event is a great honor. All students are encouraged to prepare the
All-State Audition Materials and audition. Summer is an ideal time to prepare those materials.
***ALL 10th, 11th and 12th Graders are required to audition***
ALL-COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL HONORS BAND/JAZZ BAND
The ALL-COUNTY HS HONORS BAND/JAZZ BAND is made up of Orange County High School
students who have been selected through an audition process using the same materials as All-State. This
audition takes place in November/January with the performance in the latter part of January/February. The
director will help prepare interested students during after school practice sessions devoted to All-County
Bands. There are a limited number of students that can be selected for the actual audition, so attendance at
these after school sessions is important. Once selected to audition, it is imperative that these students
participate fully in the audition process. Also, all students selected to participate in the band must agree to
attend all rehearsals and performances related to All-County Honors Bands. Parents must provide
transportation to and from rehearsals and the concert.*** EVERY MEMBER OF THE BAND IS
REQUIRED TO ATTEND ALL COUNTY HONORS BAND ***
SOLO & ENSEMBLE
The Solo and Ensemble Festival of the Florida Bandmasters Association is held during the month of
February each year. The opportunity to be evaluated as a soloist or a member of a small ensemble is a
wonderful learning experience. Participation in this festival is encouraged by the director and will count
towards your grade during that marking period. Music must be selected from the FBA Music list. An
original score with numbered measures must be provided for the judge and an accompanist must be
provided with all solos. The accompanist will need to be paid a separate fee. You must sign a contract
with the director to participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival. Once you have paid the entry fee and made
the commitment to participate, failure to perform will result in a lowering of the grade. Choice of ensemble
partners becomes important because you then rely on the members of your ensemble for your grade and
festival rating. EVERY MEMBER OF THE BAND IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND SOLO & ENSEMBLE
SECTION 4: Band Parents/Chaperones/Student Leadership
Parents are a vital part of the Oak Ridge High School Band Program. Without their help, there is no way
the ensemble would be able to reach any goals we set for ourselves. As a parent, there are many things you
can do:
1. Attend Parent meetings held in the band room every 1st Tuesday of the month.
2. Be supportive of the band program and your child's participation by:
a. Assist your child to be prepared and punctual for every rehearsal and
performance.
b. Notify Directors if your child will be absent or late for performance or rehearsal. This
should be done in advance except in emergency situations.
c. Encourage your child to practice at home and help them find a quiet
11
place to do so.
d. Note students are responsible for the care of school owned instruments.
The cost of repairs is very high.
d. Show your interest and support in your child's music study by actively attending every
performance possible.
e. Discuss with the Director anything that will help them understand and
better serve your child.
f. Arrange for private lessons for your child.
g. Register to be a volunteer at https://volunteer.ocps.net.
Chaperones
Being a high school band, there will be many trips where we will need chaperones. Parents may sign up as
chaperones by calling the Band office or having their student bring in a written note stating their intent to
chaperone. Chaperones will receive the same amount of respect as the Director on trips.
Band Officers
The Band Officers are a group of leaders that work with the Director in an advisory role. These students
will also be called on for special meetings when communication is not running effectively, etc., on behalf
of the band. The Band Officers are made up of the Drum Major, Captains, Section Leaders, Equipment &
Uniform Officers and Librarians. To be eligible for an office students must be full participants in the band
program, have a positive attitude, be loyal, dedicated, and willing to give of their personal time for the
betterment of the Pioneer Band Program.
SECTION 5: PRACTICE ROOMS, AND PRACTICE ROUTINES
Practice Rooms
The director must approve the use of the practice rooms in advance. Access is obtained through the
director. You may NOT use practice rooms during a period in which you have an academic class, so don’t
ask! Practice room time is at a premium before and after school, so please schedule in advance.
-Rooms are to be used for practice only – Not social gatherings.
-GUM, food, and drinks are not permitted in practice rooms.
-Instrument cases should not be taken into practice rooms. This will keep
the room from getting too crowded and will help eliminate scuffs and marks on the walls.
-PRACTICE ROOMS ARE FOR PRACTICE
Practice Routine
High School student practice routines should be very focused with a few goals in mind. You do not have to
practice four hours a day to be successful on your instrument. In order to accomplish the most in the least
amount of time, you must have a plan.
Each session should begin with Tone Development (Breathing Exercises, Mouthpiece work, Long Tones,
and Range Development). This exercise will help you develop great tone quality. Once you establish a
great sound you can transfer it to all portions of your practice session. Do not hesitate to use a mirror to
check your embouchure to see if your face is set correctly.
After tone development, work on your Technical Studies (Scales & Arpeggios, Lip Slurs, and Articulation
Exercises). Always remember that tone development is still essential. Technical studies teach key
signatures, technique, flexibility, clarity of articulation, and technical facility over your instrument. Practice
technical passages slowly to allow your ear to hear the details (playing with great sound and articulating the
music well).
After working on technical studies, work on your Music. Fix mistakes by saying each rhythm while
fingering at the same time. Slow practice makes more sense because you have more time to correct your
problems. Isolate problem areas (practice two difficult measures at a time) and then play the entire piece.
Practice your musical studies the same way you would practice your technical studies and tone
development.
The practice session should take about 30-45 minutes daily. If you use this plan every day (even on
weekends and holidays) you will grow as a musician.
Practice does not make perfect. PERFECT PRACTICE MAKE PERFECT.
12
Self-Guided Questions:
Do I have the correct hand position and playing position?
Am I sitting with correct posture?
Am I breathing properly?
Do I sound good?
Would Mr. Fernandez want me to be practicing this?
Section 6: GRADING SCALE/MUSICIANSHIP STANDARDS
Each Semester is divided into 2 nine week periods. Each nine week period is worth 40% of the semester
grade. The semester exam is worth 20%. Nine weeks (40%) + Nine weeks (40%) + Semester Exam (20%)
= 100% final semester grade.
Each nine weeks (40%) will be divided as such:
 Daily Participation – 20%
This includes every after school rehearsal and every class.
 Performances – 40%
This includes every performance.
 Daily Progress – 15%
This includes individual practice, sight-reading, honor group auditions, excerpt playing.
Progress is shown through tone-quality, intonation, technique, phrasing, articulation, and music
reading.
Your Musicianship Standards are a large part of this grade.


Quizzes/Tests – 15%
Quizzes and tests will be given throughout the year on scales, sight-reading, prepared
pieces, music excerpts, and specific musical concepts and techniques.
Homework – 10%
Homework will be given throughout the year and will consist of such things as
worksheets, book readings, and specific musical passage preparation. A big part of this
grade will be you taking your instrument home for practice.
Musicianship Standards
Musicianship Standards are a large part of the curriculum at Oak Ridge High School. They contain all
aspects of great musicianship and will make you a better musician. Please see the attached papers to see
what the standards include.
1) All students must finish a minimum of 3 requirements per 9 weeks and must finish
his/her level by the end of the year. For the first 9 weeks, students are only required
to complete 2 standards, due to the time constraint of marching band.
2) If a student decides to do all of his/her standards at once and finish, that student may
opt to wait until next year, or they may continue passing requirements off. Students
will get full credit on their report card should they finish a level early.
3) All requirements must be passed off individually by the director and written in the
master book. Only requirements written in the master book will be counted toward
the final grade. If it is not written in the master book it does not exist! Make
sure you check it if you are unsure!
I strongly believe in quality over quantity and require that in order to be passed off an exercise must be
played with no note, key signature, or rhythmic errors. If you have a question, please do not hesitate to
ask!
IMPORTANT: Students have a full 9 weeks to complete 3 standards. It is strongly urged that you begin
passing them off as soon as possible before the end of the term. I am not responsible for a student that is
unable to play because they wait until the last minute.
13
These standards will be factored in as part of your progress grade.
14
