Instructions for Completing Your
STUDY PLAN

All students are expected to complete a minimum of 44 units. An average of 3.0 overall and for all
courses listed on the MS advancement to candidacy form is required for graduation.

MS Comprehensive Examination Plan: Of the 44 unit minimum, three, 2 unit courses of BE 299:
Seminar and one, 2 unit course of BE 495: TA Training Seminar, are also required.

MS Thesis Plan: Of the 44 unit minimum, three, 2 unit courses of BE 299: Seminar and 2 units of BE
495: TA Training Seminar are required. Two, 4 unit courses of BE 598: Preparation for Thesis are also
required.

Please note that lower-division courses (i.e. two digit courses 1-99) may not be used for the M.S. degree.
If you plan to take lower division undergraduate courses that does not satisfy your M.S. requirement,
please do so with a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading basis which will not affect the overall grade point
average. However, no more than 2 courses (8 units) of upper division undergraduate courses (100 level)
can apply towards the graduate course requirements.

Once the study plan has been submitted, any changes to it will require submitting a new form. There is no
limit on the number of times a Study Plan can be submitted.

During your last quarter of enrollment in the BE Program, students are required to file an Advancement to
Candidacy petition during the first two weeks of the last quarter in residence. In addition, students of the
Thesis Plan need to nominate a formal Master Thesis Committee. The form for doing so is posted on the
BE website under the ‘Academics’ tab under ‘Graduate Student Services’, under ‘Forms’ in the left
frame.

THIS FORM IS A WORD INTERACTIVE FORM AND CAN BE COMPLETED BY TABBING
THROUGH THE FIELDS. Submit form to the Graduate Adviser by the end of the 2nd quarter after
you are admitted. Please note that courses taken must be approved or pre-approved in order to count
towards your degree requirement. Please turn in the form early to avoid any problems which could
prevent your graduation.


A minimum of 44 units are required which includes three 2 unit courses of BE 299: BE Seminar and 2 units of BE 495 TA Training
Seminar. Thesis students also need to enroll in two, 4 unit courses of Preparation for Thesis, BE 598, in the final two quarters in
residence.
PLEASE NOTE: Because of the flexibility of the BSIP curriculum as outlined below, first year BSIP students are highly advised to
meet with the BSIP Field Adviser for the approval of selected courses before enrolling in courses which includes Individual Studies
courses beginning with the Fall quarter and each quarter thereafter until the requirement for the MS degree has been met.
