1. Executive Director’s Reflection *
When teaching a business ethics class, I find it a rich territory for reflection when we discuss how
ethical behavior means going well beyond legal compliance to living out fully the mission, vision,
and values of an organization. The spirit of the founder or CEO, the passionate culture of the team,
the ultimate service provided and its meaning interpreted by organizational leaders all motivate and
inspire those working within an organization or business. This sense of purpose fuels others in a way
that makes just “complying” to legal requirements seem so minimal, ineffective, and boring. How we
respond to an ethical dilemma is more influenced by our integrity, by the greatest good for the
greatest number, by the rights of others, by our sense of responsibility for the entire enterprise.
Would this be the case in the settings within which we work also?

2. NACC sends February 11, 2014 World Day of Sick Letter to U.S. bishops. *
For the past several years, NACC Executive Director, David Lichter, has sent on behalf of the
NACC a letter with documents to the U.S. bishops, and in the past two years we included a list of
the NACC members in a (arch)diocese to the ordinaries of dioceses. To view this year’s letter and
the documents that accompanied the letter, you can go to our Episcopal Advisory Council page.
3. Would you like to participate in our NACC 50th Anniversary Planning? *
In April 1965, the NACC was established by the Administrative Board of the former National
Catholic Welfare Conference. [Historical note: in 1966 following the Vatican II Council, the bishops
reorganized the NCWC, transforming it into the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB)
and its standing secretariat, the United States Catholic Conference (USCC). In 2001 NCCB and the
USCC were combined to form the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).] We are
excited to look toward 2015 to celebrate the NACC’s 50th anniversary! The 40th anniversary was a
wonderful celebration. We look to begin planning for this celebration. If you would like to be part of
this planning, please contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org) by Friday, February 28th.
4. Planning for conference calls with our retired and emeritus members *
In March we will be hosting conference calls with our retired and emeritus members. If you would
like to participate in these calls, please contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org).
5. Last call for being part of a conference call with NACC bilingual Hispanic/Latinos *
In the coming weeks, the NACC would like to hold a conference call for all NACC members who
are bilingual Hispanic/Latino for the purpose of networking and learning how we can better serve
our members. Please contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org) to inform her of your interest to
participate. We will then send out a date preference email to select the best time for the call. Thank
you in advance for being willing to participate in this call. Please contact us by this Friday,
February 21, 2014.
6. Last call for being part of a conference call among NACC African-born members *
In the coming weeks, the NACC would like to hold a conference call for all NACC members who
are African-born for the purpose of networking and learning how we can better serve our members.
Please contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org) to inform her of your interest to participate. We
will then send out a date preference email to select the best time for the call. Thank you in advance
for being willing to participate in this call. Please contact us by this Friday, February 21, 2014.
2014 CONFERENCE
7. Don’t wait longer! Register today for the 2014 National Conference! *
Don’t wait longer to register for the 2014 National Conference! If you have misplaced your
conference brochure, you can just click on 2014 National Conference to access one. For other
questions, please contact Jeanine Annunziato (jannunziato@nacc.org). We can’t wait to see you in
St. Louis.
8. Don’t forget to sign up for our 2014 Conference Day of Reflection! *
Don’t forget to sign up for our 2014 Conference Day of Reflection! – The ‘art of dying’: responding to a
culture in denial with a word of hope, facilitated by Fr. Ronald A. Mercier, SJ. The day will take place on
Friday, May 16, 2014, at Cardinal Rigali Center in St. Louis, MO. Occasionally an issue becomes so
important that it bleeds across the usual divides in our lives. One such concern recently surfaced in
healthcare ethics, spirituality of care, and pastoral reflection; the lack of an ‘art of dying’ in our
culture. Unlike earlier ages, we live in a forgetfulness of death that creates a context of fear, not care.
During this retreat day, we will explore the challenge we face as well as resources from spirituality
and the liturgical tradition. The messages of Jean Vanier will serve as a particular resource. How can
we create a more humane space within our culture and the institutions we serve? Also, how does the
challenge of our age call the faith community and its ministers to grow in response? Check your
registration brochure for the registration form or download a copy from the website.
9. Disaster Spiritual Care ~ American Red Cross offers orientation and new training *
On Friday, May 16, the American Red Cross will be offering two sessions on Disaster Spiritual Care
at the NACC national conference. For those interested in learning more about American Red Cross
Disaster Spiritual Care there will be an orientation session and for the veteran and newly trained
volunteers there will be a new 200-level training (practical mock deployment) offered. Preregistration is required for both sessions. For more information or to register, please contact
American Red Cross Volunteer Lead Tim Serban at Tim.Serban@redcross.org.
10. As you register, please consider a donation to NACC Scholarship Fund
Please consider a donation to the NACC Scholarship Fund. All donations received help NACC
members to attend the NACC National Conference. For those members who have contributed at
past conferences through the purchase of Silent Auction items, please know that this year we will
not have a Silent Auction. We ask that you consider making a donation directly on the conference
registration form (Box E). Every dollar counts; no amount is too small or big. Thank you for your
support.

11. This Friday, February 21, is the deadline for EMR/EHR users to share assessments and
develop quality measures *
The Quality Subcommittee of the CHA Pastoral Care Advisory Committee invites our NACC
members whose systems/hospitals use EPIC, Cerner, or Meditech for their Electronic Medical
Records/Electronic Health Records (EMR/EHR) to share their spiritual assessments for the
purpose of identifying the core content of the assessments, gaining leading practices through
creating learning opportunities among those implementing the assessments, and ultimately to
explore how quality measures can be developed through data mining the EMR/EHR's. In order to
protect privacy as HIPAA requires, we suggest taking snapshots of the screens devoid of
names/numbers. To begin, the Quality Subcommittee wants to explore usage of EPIC, Cerner, and
Meditech. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact David Lichter
(dlichter@nacc.org) by Friday, February 21, 2014.
12. A Lenten Reflection resource *
Many of you might have heard of Fr. Robert Barron, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, who
hosts the website Word on Fire, www.wordonfire.org, and produced in 2011 the high quality video
series Catholicism. He offers a free Lenten Reflection series that you might find helpful for your
personal and/or professional usage. You can sign-up for this resource at www.lentreflections.com.
13. NACC co-sponsors an educational event at Fordham University *
NACC is co-sponsoring the Fordham University educational event, Contemplative Practice and Healing:
Insights on Neuroplasticity for Spiritual Care, Friday, March 28th, 2014. The keynote speaker will be Dr.

Cataldo, and Dr. Mary Beth Werdel, all of Fordham University. Click here to learn more.
14. Resources from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
The USCCB Leadership Institute offers free webinars that can benefit our ministry. When you go to
the following link, you will find at the bottom of the webpage a scroll of offerings. Two can be of
particular benefit to us: the New Evangelization and cultural diversity. The New Evangelization link
is www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/catechesis/leadership-institute/index.cfm.
The other link, below, is to five modules on fundamentals for intercultural competencies that
include:
 Frame Issues of Diversity Theologically in Terms of the Church’s Identity and Mission to
Evangelize
 Seek an Understanding of Culture and How It Works
 Develop Intercultural Communication Skills in Pastoral Settings
 Expand Knowledge of the Obstacles That Impede Effective Intercultural Relations
 Foster Ecclesial Integration Rather Than Assimilation in Church Settings with a Spirituality
of Hospitality, Reconciliation, and Mission
