It is geared toward the general student. The focus of this course will be on core English disciplines, which will include literature, vocabulary, writing, speaking, listening, and research. More emphasis is placed on tests and quizzes; however, homework will be an element of the course. Homework is graded on completion and effort rather than on correctness. Two late assignments may be turned in during a nine-week period, but the grade for those assignments will be a zero until turned in. After that, full credit may be earned if the assignment is deemed worthy. Literature: American Literature: Beginnings and Change will be studied o Myths, nonfiction works, journal entries, poems, narratives, and sermons will be studied. American Literature: Breaking Free will be studied o Nonfiction works, speeches, poems, and letters will be studied American Literature: Gaining Insight may be studied o Short stories, poems, and essays will be studied. American Literature: The Crucible will be studied o Themes, characterization, plot, and dialogue will be studied The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn may be read o Literary devices, description, theme, and characterization may studied Twelve Angry Men may be read o Literary devices, plot, characterization, dramatic devices, and theme will be studied The Old Man and the Sea may be read o Literary devices, plot, characterization, dramatic devices, and theme will be studied Homework assignments, packets, quizzes, tests, projects, and essays may/will be used to determine the grade Accelerated Reader: 20 points must be earned each nine weeks Books must be classics and books that you have already used on a test or have read in class may not be used You must log in under the supervision of a teacher or credit will not be given 200 points is awarded for successfully completing this mark; a percentage of this total will be awarded for failure to complete the 10 points Writing: PSSA Rubric 5-paragraph essay format Introductory paragraphs Support paragraphs Concluding paragraphs Persuasive Essay/s Informative Essay/s Speaking: Oral reading of assignments Oral reading of stories/poems/essays Oral reading of drama selections reading various parts dramatically Listening: The teacher will read various selections Students will read various selections Directions will be given orally and checking for understanding will be ongoing Research: This will be done primarily in conjunction with the informative essay Some research of vocabulary may also be done Students are expected to follow the rules of the district as laid out in the Student Handbook
