Multiply or divide by the conversion factor E.g. Convert 100 miles to km. Conversion factor is 1 mile = 1.609 km Miles are bigger, so to end up with a larger number of km, multiply by 1.609 100 miles = 100 × 1.609 km = 160.9 km E.g. Given that 1 kg = 2.2 lb, how many grams in ¼ lb ? 1000 g = 1 kg = 2.2 lb so 1 lb = (1000 ÷ 2.2) g = 454.5 g and ¼ lb = 454.5 ÷ 4 = 113.6 g Difficult example: My car averages 26.8 miles per gallon. How many miles per litre is this? 1 gallon = 4.55 litres Since litres are smaller than gallons we will go fewer miles, so divide by 4.55. 26.8 miles per gallon = 26.8 ÷ 4.55 = 5.89 miles per litre. ALWAYS write down the units when doing these conversions.
