Guidance Newsletter November 2012 Important Dates Friday, November 16, 2012 Progress Reports Wednesday, November 21, 2012Friday, November 23, 2012 No School – Thanksgiving Break Friday, December 21, 2012 End of First Semester Guidance Announcements The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program with the Office of Naval Research are accepting applications for the SEAP Program which places high school students at Naval Labs (Crane is a participating Naval Lab in our area) for a duration of 8 weeks over the summer ($3,225 stipend) and exposes them to scientific and engineering practices and personnel not available in their high school environment. To be eligible, students must be U.S. Citizens, High School students who have completed at least grade 9. Graduating seniors are encouraged to apply. Must be 16 years of age or older. Juniors: University of Indianapolis is hosting the Lugar Symposium on December 8, 2012. This is a leadership seminar and we may nominate one junior from Barr-Reeve to attend with other juniors from around the state. College Announcements Toyota Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program includes a two-year degree in Computer Integrated Manufacturing: Robotics from VU that combines cutting-edge curriculum, paid working experience, along with learning highly sought-after business principles and best practices of a world-class manufacturer. Over two years, students can earn as much as $30,000 in salary, which with planning can cover all of a student’s education expenses. Graduates hired by Toyota (not guaranteed) have the potential to earn as much as $64,000 yearly plus excellent benefits. Other manufacturers seek professionals with this level of experience and training, plus graduates may pursue a Bachelor’s degree in fields such as engineering, technology, or business. An apprenticeship program is a 5 year program in which students work at a skilled trade during the day (electrical apprentices earn $13.65/hour, plus insurance & retirement in year 1…increases each year) and attends college classes at night (paid for by the apprenticeship program). Vincennes University invites students to their fourth annual Music Career Day on Saturday, November 17th. Students will have the opportunity to learn about careers in the field of music, as well as VU and the VU Music Dept. Any student in grades 9-12 are welcome to attend. Seniors wishing to audition for scholarships for Fall 2013 are able to do so on this occasion, scheduled on an individual basis. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. The University of Southern Indiana is hosting Senior Seminar Exhibition Oct. 29- Dec. 2nd. There are 29 design majors majoring in either graphic design, interactive media, or illustration. There are 18 studio majors, majoring in either photography, painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, or printmaking. The public is cordially invited to attend the Artists’ Reception on Sunday, November 11th from 2-4pm located on the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. It is the responsibility of the student/parent to set up an individual college visit. To do so, you should contact the Admissions Office at the particular university at least 2 weeks prior to the date you would like to visit. Students must have proper paperwork (2 forms) on file in the guidance office for the absence to be excused and not count as an absence. Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, IN will be hosting an Engineering Recruit Day on November 30th. Students will have the opportunity to explore their engineering programs in new and exciting ways that have not 3 been offered in the past. Effective with the October 2012 test, students will be prompted to provide a photo during registration for the SAT. Students must present their Admission Tickets (and acceptable photo ID) to enter the test center. Standby testing will not be permitted. Effective with the March 2013 SAT, students will be required to provide a photo during registration.
