The 2013-2014 Missouri Official Manual (Blue Book) is now available for ordering. The 1,536-page, hardback book costs $24.99 per copy, plus shipping charges. The Missouri Press Foundation, headquartered in Columbia, is coordinating publication of the book through an agreement with the Missouri Secretary of State's office. For more than 100 years, the State of Missouri published the Official Manual as a hardback book, then discontinued publication after the 2009-2010 edition. A statute passed by the Missouri General Assembly in 2013, allows a not-for-profit organization to return the book to hardback form. The book contains detailed information on local, state and federal government, as well as stories, essays and pictures that help preserve the state's heritage. Copies are expected to be available in July. An order form for the Blue Book is available at www.mopress.com. Questions may be directed to the Missouri Press Foundation at 573-449-4167. ______________________________________________ -- Your newspaper could WIN $100 for referring a Convention Sponsor! Rewards for sponsorship are detailed on the sponsorship form which can be found at: http://www.mopress.com/CURRENT_FORMS.php WIN $100-- Any newspaper referring a company or organization that becomes a sponsor of the 2014 MPA Convention will receive a referral reward of $100. ______________________________________________ -- Washington Post, NYT, Mozilla team up for new website comment system (The Washington Post) -- In an unusual partnership, The Washington Post, the New York Times and software developer Mozilla will team up to create digital tools that will make it easier for readers to post comments and photos on news sites and to interact with journalists and each other. The two-year development project will be funded by a $3.89 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Miami-based philanthropic organization that specializes in media and the arts. As described by its developers, the as-yet-unnamed system aims to standardize the many different “community engagement” systems that Web sites now use to collect and publish outside contributions, especially reader comments and photos. Forget Brazil vs. Argentina in the World Cup. Want to see the fur fly? Debate the Oxford comma. The Oxford or serial comma is the one that comes before the “and” in a series such as: “Kelly, Al, Kenny, Ellyn, Jill, Butch, and Roy teach at Poynter.” AP style, which Poynter follows, omits that final comma, leaving “Butch and Roy” attached like “Siegfried and Roy.” Read more: http://tinyurl.com/q9sjjtg ______________________________________________ -- CenturyLink, “Your link to what’s next.” (MPA thanks its sponsors) For all your Broadband, Entertainment, Voice, Cloud, and Managed Services, contact your local CenturyLink representative: http://news.centurylink.com/resources/facts/mo _______________________________________________ -- An Unusual Media Start-Up: A Local Newspaper (The New York Times) -- Kevin Boyle has done two stints as editor of The Wave, a 120-year-old weekly newspaper in the Rockaways that has long been a source of local news in its seaside Queens neighborhood. The first came in the late 1990s, and the second began after Hurricane Sandy. But then last month Mr. Boyle abruptly left after his attempt to buy part of the paper foundered and he decided to start his own paper, a free weekly called The Rockaway Times. And so the Rockaways is about to become something unusual in this fast-moving digital information age — a two-newspaper town. In a wide-ranging interview with TheWrap, Kushner defended himself against critics who have called him out-of-touch for backing print in the midst of its widespread decline as a business. The paper, which debuted April 16, billed itself as the new voice for a sprawling city served by the Los Angeles Times and the L.A. Daily News, among other outlets. But two months later, Freedom announced it was enforcing a mandatory two-week furlough for staff at the L.A. Register and its sister publication, the Orange County Register. “Ninety percent of our business is print,” he told TheWrap. “It's the core of our business.
