Mole and the Baby Bird
Dear Families,
This week students will read the animal fantasy story, Mole and the Baby Bird. Mole finds a
baby bird and wishes to keep it as a pet. Mole comes to learn a lesson as the story progresses. This
week students will read and spell words with the diphthong /ou/ spelled ou. Students will also learn
to read and to sound out two syllable words, with the syllable division pattern vowel-consonantpattern.
In grammar, students will continue to practice adjectives and ending punctuation.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Donaghy

Mole and the Baby Bird
Skill: The letters ou can stand for the diphthong sound /ou/. A diphthong is two vowels whose
sounds blend together with two mouth movements. The diphthong ou is found at the beginning or
middle of a word.
Skill: If a word has one consonant between two vowels, the consonant usually goes with the second
syllable, making the first vowel long as in the word: raven. A less common syllable division pattern
has the consonant going with the first vowel making the vowel in the first syllable short, as in the
word robin.
