Director Update
Mrs. Traci Cormier
As hard as it may be to believe, it’s time to begin wrapping
up the 2006-2007 school year! I hope that you and your family
are starting to enjoy the signs of spring and enjoyed the recent
spring break. The first week in May is a very important week for
IAF. IAF, along with many other charter schools around the
country, is celebrating National Charter Schools Week. Here are
some fast charter school facts to help remind you why choosing
IAF, a public charter school, is a GREAT CHOICE! You can give
back to charter schools by taking action in May! It’s easy, and
your voice makes a difference. In honor of National Charter
School Week tell your story of how charter schools have helped
your student. Ask state legislators to allow the creation of more
charter schools, so all children have high-quality educational
options. You can start by calling (888) 605-8092 or visit
www.charterschools.org and click on “Use Your Voice.”
Lastly, please take the necessary time to read this month’s
Parent Update. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at IAF if you
have questions or concerns about anything regarding this current
school year or even next year! Thank you for your work with your
children and the school. Let’s work together to make these final
days of the 2006-2007 school year successful!
Summer Offerings at IAF: We are conducting
Mandatory Summer School four (4) days per week,
Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
from July 9th- August 9th, 2007. Summer school is
provided to families at no cost for grades 1-6, but there is a cost
for grades 6-12. Please note the following summer school facts:
 Grades 1-6 will operate as usual. There is not a fee for
LS summer school.
 There is a cost for summer school, per subject for
upper school. Math and English summer courses will
be $75.00 each for students in grades 7 and 8. Math,
English, and Spanish summer courses will be $100.00
each for students in grades 9- 12.
 Biology, an on-line summer course, will be $200.00.
This course is offered via Michigan Virtual University
and we provide onsite help throughout the course. The
payment goes directly for the cost of the class and IAF
is covering $50.00 of the $250.00 course cost.
**Please note that a spot will not be reserved for summer school
unless the required $25.00 deposit is accompanied with the
registration as noted on the registration form. The registration
deposit is for students in grades 7-12 only.
This is a friendly reminder that students may take only one
course, i.e., math or English, but not both. Students failing
both math and English will not be able to enroll in summer school
and will be required to repeat their current grade in the 20072008 school year. Mandatory summer school applications for
grades 1-12 were included in Term II report cards in April and
need to be returned to the school by the due date on the form.
There is a different due date for both lower and upper school.
There will be no extensions for the due dates, sorry, no
exceptions. Attendance is very important during summer school,
as it is during the regular school year. Tardiness and absences
will not be tolerated during summer school and could result in
removal from the program and the student will need to repeat
his/her grade. If a student’s absence or behavior results in
removing them from the program there will be no refunds for the
class. If you have any questions about summer school or you
need another application, please call the school and we will be
happy to assist you.
21st Century Summer Activities Program:
The after school staff has applications ready for 2007 summer
enrichment classes. Summer enrichment is available to any
student entering grades 1 – 6. There is a $50.00 charge per
students for enrichment, with a $35.00 dollar charge for each
additional student. Unfortunately, there will not be summer
enrichment offered to grade 7-12 due to our middle school 21st
CCLC grant ending on June 30. If a student is required to be at
summer school, unfortunately summer enrichment is not an
option for them.
Project Return: If you haven’t committed to enrollment for next
year and intend on doing so, DON’T DELAY. We have some
classes that are currently closed and wait lists are forming.
Therefore, you will need to be placed on a wait list and complete
all the required enrollment paperwork again if you did not commit
during the Project Return window held earlier in the year.
Unfortunately, we have about fifty families that didn’t respond and
have been dropped for next year.
Seniors and Graduation: This year marks the fourth graduating
class from IAF. Some of these seniors have been here since the
beginning of IAF and it almost feels like they are members of my
very own family! All seniors have been accepted into colleges
and are about to embark on exciting journeys into their futures. If
you are a parent of a 2007 senior, there are many exciting events
coming up in the months of May and June. These include the
prom, the Senior Dinner and Awards Assembly, the Senior Walkthrough, the “Senior Farewell” Assembly, and, most important,
GRADUATION!! Again, I am so proud of IAF and the 2007
graduating seniors, good luck graduates!
Happy Mother’s Day!

with a board to create a poster with the theme
“Character Counts in My Charter School”. The
posters will be displayed on Friday for judging

accompanied by an IAF top.
Thursday, May 3rd- Student in grades 2, 3, and

The State is Celebrating
Charter School Week, too!


The Capitol Building in Lansing will
host a statewide celebration of
academic
achievement
in
Michigan’s charter schools. The event will be
held in the Capitol’s second floor south wing on
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007 from 9:00 AM until 3:00
PM. This is only one of many celebrations and
events being held during the 8th annual National
Charter Schools Week around the state and
around the nation acknowledging that charter
schools are “Closing the Gap” on academic
achievement.
This will be an excellent
opportunity to relate key messages to your
legislators. Schools are encouraged to develop
posters highlighting school’s achievement,
missions or other aspects of school life that can
be displayed in the event area. Refreshments
will be served throughout the day. This should
be a very interesting and informative event!
Health Coordinator News!
By: Margo Aasland, IAF’s Health Coordinator
This is a very early reminder that all
prescription medication and over the
counter medication MUST be picked up by
Monday, June 18th, 2007. If your student’s
medication is not picked up by this time, it
will be destroyed. We cannot house
medication over the summer under any
circumstances. Thank you!

who have been given authority.
Observe just laws.

Student Life Spotlight
Retakes… Yes, once again we are mentioning our retake
policy.
Far too few of our students are taking
advantage of this opportunity. Please put a bug in your
child’s ear regarding this matter. We will not be
satisfied until all of our students utilize this policy.
SABIS Student Life Organization® Training Camp…
The deadline for applying for the 2007 SLO™ Training
Camp is May 7, 2007. If you have a child in grades 811, please encourage them to apply for this wonderful
opportunity. Students will leave this camp with skills
and knowledge that will make them better leaders and
hopefully make our school community a better place.
Past attendees of this camp include Elvin Caldwell,
Leonidas Caldwell, Chris Collins, Brittany Moon, and
Tyler Wilson… all who have proved to be leaders at IAF.
Senior Corner…
Seniors, graduation is NEXT MONTH!!
Senior Scholarship 2007
CHARACTER COUNTS! THEME
The character education theme for May is
CITIZENSHIP! We are striving each and every
day to instill citizenship in our students.
PLEASE, parents/guardians support us in our
mission and take the time to discuss each
student’s understanding of how to be a citizen
within our community, as well as a member of
The Academy. Some suggestions for discussion
about citizenship with your child could include:



Be a good citizen and a good neighbor.
Care about and pursue the common good.
Be a volunteer — help your school and
community be better, cleaner, and safer.
Thank you to the students that participated in the
scholarship essay contest.
IAF has already
conducted the student interviews and the final
decision for the scholarship winner(s) will be made
this month and announced at the Senior Dinner and
Awards Ceremony on May 31st. Seniors, thank you
for participating and “early” congratulations to the
winner(s).
2007 Junior/ Senior Prom
The Junior/Senior Prom will be held on May 5,
2007. This year's prom’s theme is “Hollywood
Nights” and will be held at the Sarvis Center in
Flint! Tickets are still on sale. Don’t miss out on
this year’s prom. For ticket information, please call
the front office at the main campus and talk to Mrs.
Clark.

well, the seniors will dive head first into End of Year
Exams from May 29th- May 31st, 2007.
Walk-Through and Farewell Assembly
The Senior Walk-through and Farewell Assembly is
not that far away! On May 31st, the seniors will
parade around IAF and pay tribute to the halls that
housed them for their senior year. At the end of
the parade, the seniors will have their final and
farewell assembly in the gym at 2:00 PM.
Senior Dinner 2007
IAF is proud to yet again host our annual Senior
Dinner and Awards Assembly on May 31st, 2007.
This event will take place at IAF’s Annex and will
begin promptly at 6:00 PM. IAF will cover the cost
of the graduating senior, but each additional guest
of the senior will cost $7.00 (there is a limit of 5
guests per senior, due to limited seating). Dinner
will be catered. Invitations and RSVP cards were
sent out last month. The deadline for RSVP and
payment is May 11, 2007.
If you have any

Rehearsal and GRADUATION!!
On Friday, June 8th, the seniors will meet at the
graduation location (Flint Baptist Temple) to
prepare and practice for graduation.
This is a
MANDATORY rehearsal that the seniors must
attend. The rehearsal will begin promptly at 2:00
PM.
On Saturday, June 9th, at 2:00 PM the fourth
graduating class will depart IAF and enter the
summer before college life! IAF graduation will be
at Flint Baptist Temple, 1430 East Bristol Road in
Burton. After the graduation, the graduates and
guests are invited to the adjoining room for cake,
punch, and conversation.
Lower School Yearbook
The lower school yearbook is completely dedicated to
grades K through 6. It is full of fun photos of the
many activities that we have taken part in over this
school year. The yearbook students have been
working very hard to make sure that this will be a
year to remember.
Just a reminder...Sixth graders, for many of you this
yearbook will be a very special one. We have included
a special section with messages to sixth grade
students as you move on to upper school. This
yearbook is a great way to remember your lower
school years and write messages to your friends.
We are still accepting pre-orders for the lower school
yearbook. If you are interested in ordering a yearbook
please return the form that went home in Friday
folders along with the $20.00 to Mrs. Tallmadge.
Additional forms are available in the main office and
in Mrs. Tallmadge's room. Quantities are limited, so
get your order in as soon as possible.

The Front of the Class
This column will feature a different lower and upper
school academic staff member each month. “The
Front of the Class” update each month will help
parents and students learn more about the staff of
IAF, not just the ones your child sees daily. Each
column will focus on different aspects of each staff
member.
Lower School:
This month’s lower school
academic staff member at “The Front of the Class”
is Mrs. Hovey. Mrs. Hovey is working on finishing
her first year with IAF marking her second year in
the education field. Mrs. Hovey attended Western
Michigan University and the University of
Michigan-Flint. She teaches art to all students at
the main campus, not just lower school.
Mrs.
Hovey enjoys traveling, visiting art museums,
camping, and attending baseball games.
Her
favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz. Mrs. Hovey
says that she enjoys teaching because “there is
NEVER a dull moment like other jobs. What a
bonus!” Mrs. Hovey, welcome to “The Front of the
Class”!
Upper School: This month’s upper school teacher
at “The Front of the Class” is Ms. Griffin. Ms.
Griffin has been with IAF for 6 years and,
coincidently, has been in the education field for 6
years.
Ms. Griffin attended Robert Morris
University and the University of Phoenx. She
teaches math and debate to students in grades 712. Ms. Griffin enjoys reading and traveling. Her
favorite movie is The Color Purple and her favorite
actor is the steamy Denzel Washington. She thinks
that the students at IAF are great because “they
are the best students in Flint! They are so unique
and determined. I consider them all my family!”
Ms. Griffin, welcome to “The Front of the Class”.

Students in grades K-6 are eligible to become a “Gold

GRADUATION!!!... June 9th
National Teacher Appreciation week is May 7th- 11th.
At IAF we will be celebrating our outstanding teaching
staff all week for the extraordinary job they perform on
a daily basis.
Our public school system continues to be closely
examined. Education experts and government leaders
have suggested all kinds of ways to strengthen our
education system and one of those ways is by showing
respect and support for our teachers.
Our teachers are doing an outstanding job here at IAF.
Compared with many professionals, they are often
underpaid and overworked.
They perform daily
miracles in their classrooms, which many often
overlook. We are considered to be among the besteducated citizens in the world and for that, we have our
teachers to thank.
We can improve our education system significantly by
exhibiting respect for teachers and by letting them know
how much we value their contributions. We need to
look for ways to support them and their efforts.
Teacher Appreciation Week is not about giving gifts to
your child’s teacher. It is about recognizing them and
thanking them for the positive role they play in your
child’s life.
Here at IAF we will be showing
appreciation for our teachers in many ways. However,
to a teacher, nothing can compare to a word of thanks
from a parent or student.

last day of school. When these events get closer,
Parents… With the weather beginning to change, it
might be tempting for some students to try to bend
the dress code rules. This is unacceptable and we

A good rule to follow is… When in doubt,
send your child to school in their uniform.
plan to enforce our dress code policy up to the very
last day of school.
Here is a refresher course on our dress code…
Female students can wear black pants, black skirts,
or black KNEE-length shorts.
Male students can
wear black pants or black KNEE-length shorts.
Belts are part of the uniform and are required every
day!
Both boys and girls may wear white,
burgundy, or black shirts. The only colors that may
be worn as an undershirt are white, black, burgundy,
and gray.
Absolutely NO tank tops, mid-drifts,
opened-toed shoes, mules, slide on shoes, or flip
flops are allowed at IAF. If you have any questions
about IAF’s dress code, please refer to the IAF
Student Handbook.
Students are well aware of
these rules and there will be no exceptions.
Please advise your IAF student to come to school
each day with the appropriate attire.
During the month of May, students that made the
Student Honor Code list will be able to dress down
on certain days with a coupon that were issued
during the US Academic Awards Assembly.
There
is also the $2.00 Charter School Week “IAF Pride
Day”.
Be sure to keep an eye on the school
calendar for changes or additions.

There
are some very important changes in line
for our athletic program next year. Girls’ Varsity
Basketball will move to the winter season due to
a recent ruling by the Supreme Court. However,
we will keep Junior High Girls’ Basketball in the
fall. We plan on holding a meeting in the near
future in order to discuss how IAF will adapt to
this change.
This is the 2nd year that IAF’s Athletic
Department is teaming up with Meijer to
further enhance their programs. You
can help IAF’s athletic department by
enrolling in the Meijer Rewards
Program. This program will donate a percentage of your
family’s monthly purchases to the IAF Athletic Program.
There are two ways to participate…
1. In-Store: when you apply for a Meijer Credit Card
2. On the Internet: at www.meijer.com/rewards
A very important reminder… When applying be sure to
use Code #466582, which is the organization code for
IAF’s Athletic Department. It will take anywhere from 2-3
weeks to receive your card, but once you have received
it, when shopping at Meijer simply scan your Rewards
Card and earn reward points for IAF. Thank you to
those who are already enrolled!
Varsity Basketball Update:
T-shirts commemorating IAF’s first-ever MHSAA
District championship are now on sale for
$12.00. If you would like to order one of these
t-shirts, please contact the main office at IAF.
In other news, Terrance Keaton and Tyler
Wilson both made the Mid-Michigan Laker’s AAU
Basketball Club. Terrance has already made a
splash playing for the 16 & under team. He is
currently averaging nearly 25 points per game
and well over 10 rebounds per game. Tyler is a
member of the 17 & under team, which has yet
to play their first game. If you would like more
information
on
these
teams

Elvin Caldwell and Ronald Wilson were both
accepted to Kalamazoo College. Kalamazoo
has been actively recruiting both students to
play basketball beginning in the 2007-2008
academic year. Way to go!
Track and Field
The Track and Field Season is well under way
and the IAF Varsity looks ready for all
competition this year. So far Chris Collins has
emerged as the dominant runner for the
Phoenix, but many others have also gotten off
on the “right foot”. Here are the dates of
some upcoming meets:
May 3--@ Dryden
May 4--@ Stockbridge
May 11--@ Mayville
May 12--@ Fenton
May 16--@ Lapeer West
May 18 & 19—MHSAA Regionals at
Webberville
We also have a Junior High Track and Field
team this year. We are having difficulties
scheduling meets, but this is what we have
thus far:
May 14--@ Genesee
May 17--@ Durand
May 23--@ Genesee
Do not worry, we will keep dialing the phone
in an attempt to schedule more meets for our
younger athletes.
Good luck this season!
