TURNER FENTON SECONDARY SCHOOL Course Information Course Name: Canadian and World Issues Course Code: CGW 4U0 Credit Value: 1 Prerequisite: Senior Social Science Ministry Description: This course draws on geographic concepts, skills, methods, and technologies to analyse significant issues facing Canadians as citizens of an interdependent world. Students will examine the challenges of creating a sustainable and equitable future through the study of a range of topics, including economic interdependence, geopolitical conflict, regional disparities in the ability to meet basic human needs, and protection of the plant's life support systems. Course Expectations: Regular class attendance; completing assignments on time and with care; respecting others and working cooperatively to achieve the goals of the group; and demonstrating initiative and self-motivation. Text and other resources are provided for student use. Any resources signed out by the student are his/her responsibility to return in fine order. Students with lost or damaged resources will be charged the replacement value of the item. Plagiarism: Otherwise know as academic suicide!!! Any plagiarism, electronic theft and misrepresentation of original work, copying during tests, use of unauthorized aids and false representation of identity will result in a zero on the evaluation. Parental/Guardian contact and a visit with your VP will also result from any form of cheating!! Deadlines: Some culminating tasks will have absolute deadlines while others will have negotiated deadlines. When any task is assigned with a deadline (negotiated or absolute) students are expected to hand the work in by that date. If, for a legitimate reason, you will not be able to hand in work by the due date it is your responsibility to meet with me as soon as possible and no later than 3 days before the due date. DO NOT COME AND SEE ME DURING CLASS TIME TO DISCUSS THIS, come before or after school so that we will be able to talk uninterrupted. HINT: Come with copies of the work done to date so that we can discuss what needs to be done in any extra time granted. You will receive marks in the following areas: Knowledge Understanding (KU) Thinking and Inquiry (TI) Communication (CO) Making Connections (MC) 15 % 20 % 15 % 20 % Following learning skills will be taught and assessed throughout the course. Rating for them will appear on the final report card. Working Independently Teamwork Organization Work Habits Initiative Term Work: quizzes, labs, assignments, presentations, tests etc. Homework: Homework will count toward your Learning Skills. In addition, you may be asked to Communicate your answers to the rest of the class which will count toward KU, TI, CO, and/or MC portion of your final grade. In order to be successful, homework must be completed. Student Expectations: Regular attendance is important. If you miss a class, YOU are responsible for catching up. If absent, a call must be made from home to the attendance office and a note is required upon your return to school. Punctuality is essential. You must come prepared to class everyday. Notebooks are to be kept organized and up to date. Deadlines: Major tests and assignments will be announced in advance. It is the student's responsibility to seek assistance from the teacher when he/she is unable to complete an assignment due to insufficient knowledge or skill. Be sure to advise the teacher of this difficulty well in advance of the deadline. Most deadline are absolute, only a few are negotiable. Work that is not completed by either a negotiated or absolute deadline will not be evaluated. Chronic lateness in submitting assignments or completing tests, may prevent the teacher from evaluating a student's ability to demonstrate the course expectations. This may require the student to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skills within an alternate setting such as summer school. Missed Summative Assessments: Students who know ahead of time that they will miss an assessment are expected to discuss the situation beforehand with the subject teacher. Acceptable reasons would include school activities, medicals etc.. Students who miss an in-class summative assessment for an unauthorized reason may lose the opportunity to complete the task. Students who are absent on the day of an assessment for reasons such as illness or suspension are responsible for: The work covered and assigned during the class. The handing in of assignments at a time negotiated with the teacher. The writing of any missed tests at a time negotiated with the teacher. After a legitimate absence, the student is to speak with the teacher within 24 hours upon returning to school. The student must make arrangements for an alternative date for the missed assessment.
