Driver’s Education
According to Oklahoma law, any person under the age of eighteen
years who wants a driver’s license or permit must be able to
successfully read at the eighth grade level. The State Department of
Education has an approved reading test given to evaluate a child’s
reading ability. Most public schools give their students these tests
in the eighth grade. Home educators may go to an alternative
testing site or schedule the exam with a public school when the
child is in eighth grade. Visit the State Department of Education
website: www.sde.state.ok.us, to find a list of approved Reading
Proficiency test sites. This page can be reached by going to the Site
Index. For more information call the Department of Education’s
Student Assessment, Research and Planning Section at 405-5213341. Students must have a certified birth certificate, social
security number, and usually a photo I.D. The state has passed a law
that gives parents the right to teach driver’s education at home.
Visit http://www.dps.state.ok.us/dls/pub/PTDE.pdf to obtain a
PARENT-TAUGHT DRIVER’S EDUCATION packet about the details.
