The Japanese people __36__ have rejected nuclear power, he said, after having “learned through the sacrifice

A hamburger that’s as healthy as salmon certainly sounds appetizing. This is just one of the possibilities
that scientists hope to __41__ through the use of new techniques for producing cultured meat. Meat grown in a
lab is an essential technology for expanding countries in the 21st century. With the world’s population __42__ to
grow to nearly nine billion by 2050, scientists have suggested that cultured meat may be the solution to the feared
global food shortage.
It’s not just scientists that are talking about the benefits of growing meat in test tubes. Animal rights
organization PETA has also offered a US$1 million prize to any scientist who can bring cultured chicken meat to
supermarkets by 2012. If this happens, PETA would see this development __43__ a major step towards reducing
animal cruelty and saving the environment. The organization believes that once meat can be produced in the lab,
it will eliminate the need for farming and thus __44__ greenhouse gases given off by livestock.
Cultured meat is grown by soaking stem cells in a nutrient-rich soup and then manipulating them to grow
into muscle tissue. However, the best ingredients for the soup and even the type of cells needed to produce the

2012 prophecy has taken the world by storm and nowhere has there ever been so much excitement and
theories associated with this prophecy. Many people are of the opinion that in the year 2012 or 21 December 2012
to be more precise, the world is going to end or a major part of our earth is going to be destroyed with widespread
havoc and death all over the globe. The basis behind this fear is a group of prophecies from different sources and
certain scientific theories. Whenever there is a doomsday prophecy, people seem to be eager to connect different
theories and statements in old texts to substantiate the prophecy and start to panic. Let us see what each prophecy
holds and how it is to be interpreted.
Most of the doomsday enthusiasts seem to draw their conclusions from the fact that the Mayan calendar is
going to end on that day. 11:11 am on 21st December 2012 is a solstice and brings an end to the Mayan
5,125-year-long calendar. Many people jump to the conclusion as this is the end of a long calendar the Mayans
would have known that the world would end on that date. Actually it should be taken as a date of transition
rather than an end point. People seem to forget that after an ending comes a new beginning and heralding of a
new era. Although many people believe in a new era and beginning, they feel the ending of the past phase is
usually accompanied by large scale destruction and havoc. To a certain extent this may be true as people have to
learn from their mistakes and there is no better teacher than nature itself. Destruction from a cataclysmic event
and the resultant hardships can bring about a spiritual transformation in many people and thus sow the seed for a
new and better age. Some people believe that the old has to be completely wiped out for the new to be possible
and hence propound the theory of an apocalypse which will almost annihilate the whole world.
Apart from the Mayan calendar, the 2012 Mayan prophecies are based on many other theories which all have
one thing in common and that is the ending of a particular length of time and starting of a new one. If you take the
prophecy of Nostradamus it foretells the visit of a comet or a comet planet which passes close to our planet after a
particular number of years. This size of the comet is supposed to be huge and will trigger many cataclysmic
events when it passes near earth. There are also many theories which suggest that this comet will force certain
asteroids off their orbits and they will be on collision course with the earth. A hit from a large asteroid can create
a force of several nuclear explosions and cause massive destruction. Many theories in the 2012 prophecy also
suggest that China or Iran or both, will take advantage of the widespread anarchy in the world caused by the
disastrous events and will bring about another World War.
Some also attribute the coming of the apocalypse in 2012 to certain galactic alignments and astronomical
events. There are some who draw their theories from ancient texts of renowned divining arts like the I-Ching and
so on. The fact is all theories seem plausible, but the question remains whether the destruction will be on the scale
which is predicted, or 2012 is just the year where there is a tremendous shift in the thinking and attitudes of
people around the world, which will herald a new age. It all remains to be seen.
70. What is the best title for the passage?

Nervousness is our emotional reaction to stress. It is something most of us have experienced at some point
in our life. It usually happens when we face an important event. For example, we may get nervous during an
interview, while performing on stage, or even before an examination. At times, nervousness may be due to
medical conditions such as hormonal imbalances or anxiety disorders. It can also be caused by excessive use of
caffeine.
When we are nervous, there are certain changes that happen within our body. These changes occur because
of an increase of stress hormones in our blood. Some common signs of nervousness are: hands become sweaty,
mouth dries up, heart beat increases, and it becomes difficult to concentrate. Other reactions to nervousness
include muscular pain in the neck, an upset stomach or irritability.
Generally speaking, some amount of nervousness is good as it makes us do better. When we feel nervous
before going on stage, our body becomes more alert and we tend to perform better. However, occasionally
nervousness becomes so severe that it disturbs our daily activities such as sleeping and eating. It also prevents us
from doing well at work and from forming meaningful relationships.
For most people, nervousness is something that can be settled easily. But there are times when it becomes
difficult to handle on our own. In such cases, it is better to seek medical help. There are different treatments
available to manage nervousness, including medication and counseling. If treated properly, nervousness can be
easily resolved.

Perhaps no one knows the value of training better than an astronaut. If an ill-prepared astronaut makes a
fatal mistake during a space mission, he puts the crew in danger. Therefore, to an astronaut, training is of the
greatest importance.
The skills needed for a mission to space require months of extensive preparations. For instance,
astronauts receive training in a Shuttle Mission Simulator (SMS), a machine that is made to recreate the actual
space shuttle. The SMS imitates everything the space shuttle does, and the simulations include all aspects of a
space mission, from the pre-launch procedures to the end of the voyage.
Another skill that the astronauts must learn is how to make a space shuttle dock with or join to the
International Space Station (ISS). To make it dock with the ISS, the astronauts must ensure that the space shuttle
P. 8
is within three inches of the docking ring on the station. The astronauts use a controller similar to those used for
video games, but they cannot push a reset button if they make a mistake. In space, there is no room for error.
Practicing for a spacewalk also takes a lot of time. In conditions that simulate space, astronauts are
trained in a large pool equipped with full size models of the shuttle and the ISS. Even with all of this preparation,
however, a spacewalk presents many dangers. The smallest mistake could threaten the lives of the astronauts
when they are outside their spacecraft.
Landing is another important aspect of space travel for which astronauts endlessly train. Before an actual
shuttle mission, astronauts practice landing for hundreds of hours in a specially designed aircraft that simulates
the characteristics of the real space shuttle as it glides toward the earth at more than 300 miles per hour.
In addition to their specialized skills, astronauts spend years becoming used to everyday activities in zero
gravity. Nothing is the same in space as it is on earth, from cooking dinner to taking a shower. The versatile
training that astronauts receive is truly out of this world.
77. What is the best title for this passage?
(A) The Interesting Life of an Astronaut.
(B) Out-of-This-World Training.
(C) A Dangerous Space Shuttle Mission.
(D) How to Avoid the Dangers in Outer Space.
78.

(A) Many-sided.
(B) Risky.
(C) Boring.
(D) Famous.
79. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
(A) Astronauts practice landing for hundreds of hours in a simulated space shuttle.
(B) Astronauts spend months getting accustomed to daily activities in zero gravity.
(C) The astronauts must be able to keep the space shuttle within 3 inches of the docking ring on the station.
(D) When the space shuttle glides toward the earth, its speed is more than 300 miles per hour.
80. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
(A) In space, the astronauts can push a reset button if they make an error.
(B) The extensive preparations for a space mission last months.
(C) Cooking dinner in space is much easier than it is on earth.
(D)A spacewalk doesn’t present as many dangers as learning to land.
