TRY THESE SUPER SPELLING ACTIVITIES

(OR CREATE INTERESTING ONES OF YOUR OWN!)

Cut words out of the newspaper or magazines and glue onto paper.

Write out words using blue for consonants and red for vowels.

Draw a picture for each word (not always possible).

Write words using fancy lettering.

Type your words on the computer using different fonts for each word. Print and carefully glue or tape into your journal.

Try writing sentences using the letters in your words (example: bread = Bill runs eagerly at dawn.).

Write riddles (with 3 clues each) for 8 of your spelling words. Be sure to include your answer [Example: “This word is an animal. It lives in the forest. It starts with the letter B.” ___ ___ ___ ___ (bear).

Write the number of syllables next to each word.

Write the dictionary definition of each word.

Sort your words into categories (# of letters, #, of vowels, beginning letters, vowel sounds, or your own idea). Label your categories then list your words under the correct category.

Find a rhyming word for each spelling word.

Write a story, song, or poem using your words. Underline spelling words.

Make a cartoon using your words. Underline spelling words.

Write your words on graph paper going up 2 spaces for “tall” letters, down 2 spaces for letters “with tails,” and 1 space for “short” letters..

Design a word find. Circle spelling words.

Words-in-words: Write your word and then write at least 2 words made from the letters in the spelling word.

Write your words forwards, then backwards.

Hide your words in a letter trail. Circle each spelling word.

Write each spelling word as a rainbow word. Write the word in one color and then trace around the edges in at least three (3) other colors.

Use the following color code when writing your words [a – e = red, f – j = blue, k – o = green, p – t = purple, u – z = orange].

Spend 30 seconds on each word. Write each word as many times as you can while someone times you.

Give each letter of the alphabet a value. The students must find the value of each spelling word. For example: A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on.
