4-H PROGRAM ASSISTANT
(Part-time – 25 hours weekly)
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of leadership and organizational
development tasks to support the Columbia County 4-H Program. Work involves
preparing educational materials for 4-H club and county programs; recruiting
volunteers and members; training youth and adult volunteers to work with
community clubs and school enrichment programs; and help planning and
implementing day and residential camping programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:












Helps establish and maintain 4-H community and project clubs.
Works with 4-H members in youth development activities and issues.
Assists with the planning and implementation of 4-H school enrichment
programs.
Assists with the planning and implementation of 4-H camping programs.
Plans, prepares for, facilitates, and/or teaches classes to youth about life skill
development using the experiential learning model.
Assists with volunteer recruitment, screening, and training as needed.
Prepares handouts and lesson materials as needed.
Secures incentives and supplies for 4-H programs.
Prepares marketing items, such as flyers, brochures, bulletin boards, and fair
booths.
Handles routine requests for 4-H information and materials.
As appropriate, receives incoming calls, emails, faxes, and walk-in clients and
follows-up as necessary.
Participates in Extension Staff meetings and training as required.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTONS:
Perform other tasks as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment is varied. Work is performed in an office setting, school
setting, camp setting or outdoor educational center depending on the lesson and
curriculum. Equipment used in performance of job duties includes computer,
keyboard and printer, telephone, FAX machine, copy machine, and laminator.
Job functions are performed during a typical day but nights are weekend work
will be required as needed. Work is performed under general supervision.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:



Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; associate or bachelor’s
degree preferred.
4-H experience/knowledge (either a volunteer or 4-H alumni) preferred.
At least 2 years experience working with youth and/or volunteers in
instructional settings (formal and informal) preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:















Flexibility (willing to work weekend and evening hours).
Creativity (ability to bring new ideas to the 4-H program).
Dependability (be on time for work and special 4-H events; follow through with
work assignments).
People skills (ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of adults, teens,
and younger youth, and exercise tact and courtesy).

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as
necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to follow established procedures and perform work requiring some
detail.

Some knowledge of standard office and clerical practices.
Skill in data entry, typing, and computer software applications.
Ability to perform a variety of tasks with frequent interruptions.
Ability to prioritize assignments or tasks according to deadlines.
Ability to maintain confidential information.
Ability to build a constructive team spirit where team members are committed
to the goals and objectives of a team.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
This position requires sitting at a desk and manual dexterity to operate typewriter,
telephone, copy machine, maintain office files including records, log books, and
calendars and computer equipment with multiple software programs. Position
also requires teaching at various locations which can include camps, schools,
community centers, churches, homes. Acceptable eyesight (with or without
correction). Must be able to speak and hear clearly (with or without correction) to
obtain information from and provide information to the public both in person and
by phone. Must be able to communicate via telephone and in person. Routinely
required to use both hands while in various positions of walking, standing and

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS CONT:
stooping when teaching youth and adults. This position requires climbing stairs,
pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, actively moving when teaching youth and
adults, walking over rough terrain, and lifting and carrying upwards of thirty (30)
pounds on a frequent and routine basis.
PROFESSIONAL LICENSES:
Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license
Pay grade 107
