Cosmetology Program Guidelines for Success
Overview:
Cosmetology is a two-year program consisting of 1500 hours covering Cosmetology skills in Lab,
Related / Theory, written tests as well as Milady’s on- line course work, Science, English, & Math .
Ohio State Board of Cosmetology mandates that the curriculum of 1500 hours be tracked &
recorded for the student to be eligible to take the licensure exam. The success of each student depends on
meeting all standards set by the cosmetology instructor, all applicable academics and the Ohio State Board
of Cosmetology.
The daily attendance of the student is critical to obtain the 1500 hour standard set by the Ohio State
Board of Cosmetology. The student needs to plan on attending school on time and on a daily basis, complete
with uniform, tool kit and text book.
 Junior students are required to pass Cosmetology Lab and Related / Theory and Science in order to
advance to the senior level.
 Junior students will receive the credit hours for Math, Science and English upon successfully passing
the course.
 Senior students must have the completed 1500 hours and passed all competencies relevant to the
practice of Cosmetology to be eligible for the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensure exam.
 Any senior failing the Lab or Related course and / or failing to complete the required 1500 hours
within their combined school years will be ineligible to take their licensure exam.
 All seniors are required to complete 2 hours of the Milady’s on- line course work independently on a
weekly basis as part of the Related grade.
Both junior and senior students are responsible for practicing and retaking any test or competency
that has not met the minimum standard of 75% as set by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.
If any student is placed on the 5 day absence list, she or he must have an excused admit slip to
receive credit for any make - up or missed work, including tests, quizzes and competencies.
To be successful in the cosmetology industry, a professional image must be maintained. Specific
sanitation and safety guidelines must be met. The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, OSHA and the Lorain
County JVS require each student to dress appropriately as per safety and sanitation guidelines.
To maintain the Cosmetology Program’s professional standards, all students are required to be
dressed in clean, uniform style clothing, and / or scrubs and closed toed professional footwear with
non- skid soles during the course of the entire school day.

To All Cosmetology Junior Students & Parents / Guardians:
Welcome to Junior Cosmetology at Lorain County J.V.S. My name is Mrs. Brassfield and I will be the Lab Instructor
for all junior students.
Cosmetology is a two year program requiring 1500 hours for completion. Daily use of a time clock will document
these hours. Excellent attendance is a must for success. Only after the 1500 hours are obtained, will the student
be eligible to take the state licensure exam.
The students are also required to wear uniforms to and from school daily: starting with the first day of school.
There will be no time to change clothes at the school.
An Orientation will outline the specific requirements for success in the Cosmetology Program.
