Your student has indicated that he/she is interested in cosmetology. I will take this opportunity
to acquaint you with some of the AIMS and OBJECTIVES of this program. The treatments and
services that are generally permitted are hairstyling, haircutting, permanent waving, haircoloring, facial
and scalp treatments, hair extensions, manicuring and pedicuring.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To give each student the basics of Cosmetology in that, with practice, the students will be
able to utilize and expand his/her knowledge. To qualify graduates to meet the standards
set up by the Texas Department of Licensing as a profession.
2. To teach each student to be independent and to be a team player. To train graduates for
gainful employment in the field of cosmetology.
3. To maintain maximum efficiency and safety use of equipment and chemicals used in the
field of cosmetology. To think and be safe at all times.
Upon entering the class of cosmetology the student should realize that to become a cosmetologist it
requires more than getting enrolled. It means paying attention, cooperation with both teacher and other
students, regular attendance and hard work.
It will be necessary to like and enjoy the work to succeed. This work includes technology,
receptionist, sales and all phases of salon management. The early part of the course will be the most
difficult.
FUNDRAISERS:
To enable students to pay their SKILLS USA supplies, letter jackets or expenses related to out of town
activities. This activity will also teach selling techniques to students and group participation that will
become a valuable asset when going to work in a salon.
GRADING:
1. Nine week grades will come from 1) lab & classroom participation 2) professional attitude
3) lab clean up and 4) wearing their appropriate uniform during class, 5) Daily work
assignments, projects and from clocked hours.
2. Hours will count as a major grade each nine weeks: We encourage each student to not miss
school unnecessarily so that hours can be completed for the State Board Exam prior to
graduation. (A minimum of 500 total hours the first year and the remaining hours in the
second year) Regular attendance is essential. Student should not miss more than 5 days per
semester.
a. Hourly Grade example: A=140 +, B=125-139, C=115-124, D=100-114, F=99 & below.
3. Students will be required to pass a safety test before being allowed to work on the floor with
chemicals or power equipment. 100 minimum hours before working in the lab.
HOURS:
Students will not receive hours when a non-certified instructor is used and are asked not to clock in.
Students will not be allowed to clock in if they do not have their own lab jacket with them for class.
Students can be clocked out by instructors for behavior problems, not having supplies etc.
CLOCK:
We have a time clock according to the TDLR rules. It is for a record of the hours you have earned.
Never clock another student in or out. This will result in loss of hours for the day, and possibly for the
month, if caught by an instructor or the State Examiner. If you fail to clock in or out this will result in
a loss of hours, even if you were in class all day. A professional operator must learn responsibility.

UNIFORM:
Cosmetology students shall wear a lab smock/jacket (uniform) of washable material with sleeves. The
uniform will be worn in class for the full time you are here. Please keep your uniforms clean. If a
student does not have their smock the student will not be allowed to clock in for the day. If a student
should loose their uniform they will have 3 days to replace it.
KITS:
Kits, implements, and personal belongings should be kept in their proper place. All implements should
be marked with student's name. All student materials must be at school each day in order for the daily
assignments to be accomplished. Students are not to borrow anything from another student. In the
past, it has been a problem of things not being returned in a timely manner or not at all. Replacing a
borrowed item could get costly if you lose it. The cosmetology department is not responsible for
missing equipment. Students will be provided a locker and should keep their belongings in their locker
when not in use.
LOCKERS:
Students will be assigned a locker in the cosmetology lab, this is for cosmetology students ONLY and
all others are not allowed in lockers.
SUPPLIES:
Not having the proper and complete supplies in the lab will result in loss of points and/or hours as well
as practice time. Students will be expected to keep up with their materials and supplies.
CLEAN UP:
Students are responsible for cleaning their own stations up each day. Your station consists of styling
chair, mirror, mat and cabinet spaces. A clean-up duty list will be posted in the lab and each student
will be assigned specific duties in addition to cleaning up their own stations. This is part of your
nine-week grade.
PHONE RULES:
The cosmetology office phone is not for personal use. USE OF CELL PHONES IS PROHITBITED!
Cell phones will be picked up and sent to the office if a student is found using their cell phone in class
without permission from an instructor.
LEAVING SCHOOL:
No student is allowed to leave school without the proper and prior authorization from a parent AND
THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE on the campus where the student attends regular core classes.
SIGNED PAPERS:
Papers sent home with a student must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned in a timely manner.

PROJECTS:
1. Every student will be given the opportunity enter a project for Skills USA if they are a member.
Students will be required to purchase some of their own supplies for their projects with costs
running approximately $20-$40. If a student's project receives a first place ranking at district
competition, their project will go on to the state level contest.
2. We will hold auditions for the senior students to compete in Skills USA Quiz Bowl, which is a
theory based contest.
ATTENDANCE:
Students should bring an admit slip from their school when absent from cosmetology class. In order to
complete hours needed before graduation, students should not have over 5 absences for the year.
Students need to be punctual to class and are given 2 weeks to make up hours in late lab missed.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Students are required to purchase their own kit, books, lab jacket and cosmetology scrubs. Students
will also be responsible to provide $25.00 on a prepaid credit card for their student permit. Students
should be attentive and courteous as well as willing to accept constructive correction. They should be
punctual and willing to perform all duties asked of them, which includes taking appointments that are
booked.
