An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the nursing team within Wards 18/19 Ninewells.
These are busy Orthopaedic Trauma wards caring for patients with a variety of needs.
You will help in the delivery of quality and individualised care under the supervision of a
Registered Nurse.
Good communication skills are essential and previous experience dealing with the public
would be beneficial.
You will be required to comply with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in
Scotland throughout your employment. Information on the Healthcare Support Worker

JOB PURPOSE
As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will carry out routine individual care duties for patients,
clients, carers and relatives in support of and supervised by a registered nurse. Carry out assigned duties to
maintain hygiene, order and safety within the environment specified in Section 4 below.

SCOPE AND RANGE (please complete as appropriate for the specific area)
To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for patients/clients/carers/relatives/
staff within the Musculoskeletal and A&E Clinical Group to meet identified care needs.
The post holder may be required to provide care in the following types of environment

Orthopaedic Ward –elective surgery/ trauma/rehabilitation/bone and soft tissue infection
The postholder has responsibility for:

Support registered nurses in the orientation of new staff to the area
Budgetary Responsibilities:
Effective participation in dealing with supplies ordering, patients valuables and use of equipment

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Your performance must comply with the national “Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare
Support Workers in Scotland” 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support
Workers.


1. Carry out assigned tasks in delivering and supporting patient care under the direction of a registered
nurse to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care
2. Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines that are attending and treating
clients to maximise care
3. Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to clients’ carers and relatives and refer them
to a registered nurse for any questions they may have on the clients’ condition or for any suggestions or
complaints that they wish to raise

RESPONSIBILITY FOR RECORDS MANAGEMENT
All records created in the course of the business of NHS Tayside are corporate records and are public
records under the terms of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937. This includes email messages and other
electronic records. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep appropriate records of your work in NHS
Tayside and manage those records in keeping with the NHS Tayside Records Management Policy and with

Remuneration
Hours of Duty
The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £14,508 to £17,253
(pro rata for part-time staff).
Placing on the scale on
appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher
subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the posts are:
Post: 1: 22.5hours Ward 18, Ninewells Hospital
Post 2: Temporary 22.5 hours Ward 18, Ninewells Hospital
Post 3: 30 hours Ward 18, Ninewells Hospital
Post 4: 22.5 hours Ward 19, Ninewells Hospital
Post 2: Temporary post for 6 months to provide cover for
maternity leave. The end date is subject to amendment should
the substantive post-holder give notice to change their return.
Internal applicants: Written approval must be sought from your
line manager prior to applying for this secondment. You will be
required to bring this if shortlisted for interview.
Superannuation
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and
70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay,
which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime
or travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.12 are as follows:

Contributions are subject to tax relief and reduced National
Annual Leave
Insurance contributions. NHS Tayside also makes a substantial
contribution towards scheme benefits – currently around 14% of
basic pay.
On appointment = 27 days (pro rata for part-time Staff) or 5.4
weeks per year.
After 5 years aggregated service = 29 days (pro rata for parttime staff) or 5.8 weeks per year
After 10 years aggregated service = 33 days (pro rata for parttime staff) or 6.6 weeks per year
References
Public Holidays = 8 days (pro rata for part-time staff) or 1.6
weeks per year

The successful applicant will be required to become a member
of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) in respect of
regulated work with protected adults and regulated work with
children.
National Discussions are currently taking place
regarding charging individuals for PVG fees. Once these are
concluded successful applicants will be advised of the outcome.
