Part-Time Summer Relief Domestic Assistants, Band 1
Fixed Term from 10 June 2013 to 1 September 2013
Salary Scale: £14,508 - £14,864 per annum pro rata
The following opportunities have arisen within the Domestic Services Department and will be
based at either Ninewells Hospital or Royal Victoria Hospital.
Part-Time Summer Relief Domestic Assistants working various hours from 20 hours to 35 hours
per week Monday to Friday and/or Monday to Sunday and covering early shift, day shift and back
shift.

You will be required to undertake cleaning duties in wards and departments to achieve and
maintain a high standard of cleanliness. Experience is an advantage but not necessary as a full
training programme will be provided. Reliability and a flexible approach to work are essential.
You will be required to achieve the mandatory Induction standards for Healthcare Support
Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your
employment.

SCOPE AND RANGE
NHS Tayside serves a population of approximately 387,000 covering regions including Tayside, Perth
and Kinross, Angus and North Fife.
The Domestic Assistant works as part of a multi disciplinary team, delivering a high standard of cleaning
in areas of high activity with frequent change. Staff must be flexible, adaptable and work to support
other staff, who have clinical responsibility to patients.
5.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Induction Standards & Code of Conduct
Your performance must comply with the national “mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare
Support Workers in Scotland” 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers.






















Carry out all cleaning tasks detailed in work schedules and incidental cleaning as necessary to agreed
standards.
Carry out specialised cleaning tasks, including isolation rooms, aseptic rooms, theatres, maternity
etc. to agreed standards, where appropriate.
Carry out cleaning tasks as requested by Supervisor or Senior Nurse on duty.
Work with colleagues to move furniture and light equipment in line with manual handling guidelines
to enable thorough cleaning.
Remove all waste and place at collection points, following organisational and departmental
procedures.
Clean uncontained body fluid spillages in public areas and non-clinical areas.
Work in co-operation with colleagues, infection control and other staff in all areas to achieve high
standards of cleanliness.
Replenish all supplies of hand soap, toilet paper and hand towels.
Clean and fill water jugs first thing in the morning and wash crockery and glasses, where
appropriate.
Assist with patients’ meals and beverages, including cleaning of trolleys, crockery and any food
utensils, as appropriate.
Ensure the correct and economical use of equipment, supplies and energy resources.
Follow all guidance and training on safe working practices to ensure personal health and safety and
that of others, exercising a duty of care.
Follow all cleaning procedures to ensure highest standard of cleanliness and hygiene practices in line
with Infection Control Policy and Guidance.
Undertake regular training, as and when required, including yearly infection control refresher,
manual handling refresher and fire safety lectures, new cleaning methods/procedures and any other
training required.
Notify supervisor or other relevant staff of faulty equipment, building/equipment repairs,
maintenance requirements, requests for chemicals/personal protective equipment/light equipment.
Maintain all equipment and Domestic Service Room in a clean and tidy state.
Replace all equipment after use and store securely in Domestic Service Room.
Initial weekly and monthly work sheets as tasks are completed.
Work together with Department in Performance and Development Reviews.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Comply with all Policies and Procedures of NHS Tayside and the Department.
Demonstrate courteous behaviour.

Regular communication exists between the post holder and colleagues, the supervisors, ward and
departmental staff, patients, visitors and other staff within the NHS establishments.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
No formal qualifications are necessary, as the post holder will be given the necessary training to
undertake the job.
Post holder is required to

8.
SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
A work schedule is located in each area for the post holder to follow.
Where a work sheet is located in an area, this should be signed when each task is completed.
Regular monitoring is carried out by the Supervisors.
Equipment and protective clothing is provided for use, including mechanised cleaning machinery.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR RECORDS MANAGEMENT
All records created in the course of the business of NHS Tayside are corporate records and are public
records under the terms of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937. This includes email messages and
other electronic records. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep appropriate records of your
work in NHS Tayside and manage those records in keeping with the NHS Tayside Records Management
Policy and with any guidance produced by NHS Tayside specific to your employment.
9.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Demands
The job is physically demanding, requiring the post holder on a daily basis to be




Moving furniture (chairs/lockers/occupied & unoccupied beds etc.)
Working in restricted areas and confined spaces, such as cleaning under beds, small offices and
treatment rooms.
Using a polishing machine requiring repetitive pivotal pelvic movement.
High dusting, which involves stretching frequently throughout the shift.
Mental Demands
Awareness when working in challenging areas e.g. forensic/mental health/A&E/challenging behaviour
unit/Paediatrics.
Post requires concentration and ability to adapt to working in a hostile environment e.g. where there is
exposure to distressed relatives/visitors and aggressive patients / patients under the influence of alcohol
or drugs.
10. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
Staff are expected to follow closely all guidance, procedures and policies of the Department and
Organisation, whilst using their own initiative to determine the order of work.
11. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
The post holder is expected to adapt when faced with unpredictable and ever-changing situations and
modify work plans accordingly.

Hours of Duty
The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £14,508 to £14,864 per
annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on
appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher
subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Salary is paid weekly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are 20, 30 or 35 hours per week.
This is a fixed term post until 1 September 2013 to provide cover
for annual leave period.
Superannuation
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and
70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay,
which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime
or travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.12 are as follows:

Contributions are subject to tax relief and reduced National
Insurance contributions. NHS Tayside also makes a substantial
contribution towards scheme benefits – currently around 14% of
basic pay.
On appointment = 27 days (pro rata for part-time Staff) or 5.4
weeks per year.
After 5 years aggregated service = 29 days (pro rata for part-time
staff) or 5.8 weeks per year
After 10 years aggregated service = 33 days (pro rata for parttime staff) or 6.6 weeks per year
