Television Production Studio Technology
The introduction of digital technology revolutionized the business of TV/Film production.
Production studios became more compact, more affordable and gained a wide range of linear
and nonlinear editing and special effects capabilities such as Down Stream Keying (DSK) of
graphics and subtitles, live 2D/3D virtual studio set construction and many more.
Assignment
Study the archticture of the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology film studio
located in F3 in the beaconside building.





Identify all the equipments in the studio and produce a block diagram and
wiring diagram for the studio.
Identify the various signals and signal formats distributed in the studio.
Explain the function of each equipment presnt.
Research into the hardware, software and design considerations of modern
digital TV/Film production studios and use your research outcomes to
recommend possible upgrades to the studio.
Explain in detail the technology associated with one of the following areas:
 Talkback systems
 Video recording formats and equipments (D1, D9, DV, etc)
 Video switchers and special effects generators
 Studio cameras
 Audio mixing and recording
 Video networking and distribution
 Ligting rigs
 Audio/video broadcasting equipment and standards
Assignment outcomes
 Write a standard technical report (around ‘but not limited to’, 2000 words) to
summarise your research findings and outline your recommendations.
 Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to present your work. (between 5 to 10 slides)
Submission format
 The report structure is to include Abstract, Contents, Introduction, List of Figures,
Conclusions and References. Printed out and presented in a folder. A second copy of
the report is to be submitted on a CD-Rom
Assessment
Work will be graded according to the criterion-referencing grid on the assignment cover
sheet – read it carefully to avoid losing marks unnecessarily. All students are expected to
have read and understood the university’s leaflet on plagiarism – any student submitting
work which is not their own will be dealt with under the university plagiarism rules. The
submission deadline is 15th DEC 2004. Please refresh yourself on the new hand in procedure
for assignments before the deadline to ensure that you do not lost marks unnecessarily. In
addition try to hand in your assignment earlier than the deadline to avoid problems with
queues of people trying to hand in assignment.
