PROJECT INVOLVEMENT: 2000-2005 2009-2010 From July, 2000 until June, 2005 I shared responsibilities for our faculty’s coordination of its involvement in the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI). In 2009, I was reappointed University of Lethbridge faculty of education AISI Coordinator. 2009-2010 A continuing Research and Development initiative with schools, teachers and administrators in Rocky View Schools. The focus is professional learning. The method is collaborative inquiry. 2008-2010 A school improvement initiative with a small group of teachers in Brooks Junior High School. - 14 - Dr. David Townsend, Curriculum Vitae, November, 1999 2006-2009 Served as an external researcher for Heritage Heights School and Blackie School (Foothills School Division) as they implemented their school improvement plans. 2007-2008 A three-year Research and Development initiative with Lethbridge Family Services, using a model of action research to promote professional development, collaboration, and evidencebased practice in a human services organization with a staff of 420. 1988-2007 For nearly 20 years I have been committed to the improvement of university teaching, particularly in this university. In that time I submitted eight proposals to various administrators, encouraging them to give teaching the attention it deserves. In 2006, thanks to the efforts of a few remarkable people, the University of Lethbridge created the Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning. I was honored to serve as one of the first two Teaching Fellows in the Centre. 2006-2007 Coalhurst Elementary School Improvement Initiative. Working as an action research team, staff members and I have addressed the concerns of a newly-designated Priority School by focusing on student performance on the Provincial grade 3&6 Achievement Exams. In June, 2007 students at Coalhurst exceeded the provincial average for Acceptable Standard on six out of six Provincial Exams, and exceeded the Provincial average for Standard of Excellence on three out of six exams (by far their best results ever). 2005-2007 St. Francis Junior High School Learning Communities Initiative. School-based staff development with 50 participants. One of the most important outcomes of this Initiative was a steady increase in Grade 9 provincial Achievement Exam results that culminated in June, 2007 with the best results that the school had ever achieved. 2005-2008 Turner Valley, then Blackie and Heritage Heights Schools, in Foothills School Division, # 38. An action research initiative involving eight schools. 2002-2004 Chinook’s Edge School Division: Exploring and Refining a System-wide Learning Community. An 18-month study that explored the essential components of a learning community, and made recommendations for implementing Alberta Learning Commission Recommendation #53. 2004 Lester B. Pearson High School Action Research Project. A pilot study to ascertain the willingness and readiness of the staff of a large high school to participate in action research. 2004 Peace Wapiti School Division: Implementing Site and System Learning Communities. A pilot study that identified the present state of system and school effectiveness in implementing learning communities, and facilitated increased capacity for implementation of Alberta Learning Commission Recommendation #53. 2004 Faculty of Education: The spirit of educational leadership in Alberta Phase II. This study follows on the CASS study of superintendents to identify the present state of the principalship in Alberta. 1999 – 2006 Coordinator (with Pam Adams) of a series of initiatives fostering faculty development in teaching. The staff project for the year was the implementation of personal professional development plans. 1994 - 96 School-Based Staff Development. I worked with several local schools (Father Leonard Van Tighem, F.P. Walshe, Noble Central, for example) and with the leadership of Blood Reserve Schools and Yellowhead School Division as they pursued initiatives in teacher development. 1992 -1998 Teaching In Focus. I committed considerable time and effort to the development of this group of University of Lethbridge instructors who met regularly to observe, discuss and improve the teaching of group members. 1991 - 1993 The Teacher Evaluation Policy Impact Study. As one of the principal researchers in this provincially-funded project, I investigated and documented promising initiatives in the area of teacher evaluation in two case study sites. 1991 - 1992 The Children of St. Martha School Staff Development Project. I worked closely with the school staff as they engaged in "community building" and prepared for an external school evaluation. 1988 - 1991 Blood Indian Reserve Schools Professional Development Project (with Richard Butt and several graduate students). A Pilot Study of the feasibility of using collaborative autobiography and peer supervision to facilitate teacher development. 1988 Blood Indian Reserve Schools Evaluation Project February-July, 1988. I served as project director. Working with a team of 20 teachers, administrators and university faculty members we completed a detailed evaluation of the three Blood Reserve schools in the last year of direct control by the Federal Department of Indian Affairs. 1988 - 1991 Yellowhead School Division School-Based Staff Development Project. With Richard Butt and key leaders in the district we used a combination of collaborative autobiography, peer coaching and action research to foster the growth of eleven district groups involving 93 teachers and administrators. 1985 – 1993 Medicine Hat Teacher Supervision and Evaluation Project (later called Coaching Supervision and Evaluation). In consultation with leaders in the district I designed the original "model." As well, I planned and presented workshops and served as consultant for several years.
