2ND ANNOUNCEMENT
Invitation to HFE 2004
We invite you to participate in the HFE 2004 Conference, which is being held at
the Cairns International Hotel, Cairns, Queensland Australia from the 22nd to 25th
of August 2004.
This is the first joint Conference of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of
Australia (HFESA) and the Pan Pacific Council on Occupational Ergonomics
(PPCOE).
ABOUT THE HFESA
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) is an
interdisciplinary organisation of professionals concerned with the role of humans
in simple and complex systems, the design of equipment and facilities for human
use, and the development of environments for comfort and safety. The
membership is composed of psychologists, designers, engineers, physiologists,
health professionals and other scientists and professionals from Australia and
around the world.
The membership voted, at its AGM 2003, to change the name of the Ergonomics
Society of Australia to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia.
Annual conferences have been held since 1964 including the 11th Triennial IEA
Congress in Sydney in 1988 hosted by the ESA.
ABOUT THE PPCOE
The Pan Pacific Council on Occupational Ergonomics is a self-funded group that
was established in 1997 to promote and support occupational ergonomics in the
Pan Pacific region. It now has members from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China,
Taiwan, Thailand, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
Previous biennial PPCOE conferences have been held in Wuhan and Beijing
(China), Kitakyushu (Japan), Seoul (Korea), and Hsinchu (Taiwan).

The Conference will have the following theme:
ERGONOMICS FOR A BIZ-E WORLD
Areas of interest include but are not limited to:
 Ergonomics of the Future – emerging technologies, development of
technological fixes & tools, to living, cultural differences
 Population Groups – aging, children, ethnic aspects
 Industries – manufacturing, tourism, mining, construction, health, farming and
agriculture
 Regions & areas - ergonomics in Industrially Developing Countries, effects of
climate, work in hot environments
 Design - signage/forms, useability, industrial design
 Systems – productivity, macro ergonomics including management systems,
HCI, e-commerce
 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) – Musculoskeletal Disorders, slips, trips
and falls, Manual Handling, fatigue, shiftwork, risk management
Papers pertaining to these topics and others are welcome. The Organising
Committee wishes to encouge as wide a regional participation as possible. All
submissions for papers, posters, seminar topics, workshops and panels will be
examined on their merits and their relevanec to ergonomics theory and practice
throughout the world.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
ALAN HEDGE – Director of the Human Factors &
Ergonomics Laboratory at Cornell University,
New York, USA.
OTHER SPEAKERS:
The Confrence Organising Committee will be inviting some people, well known in
their field, to present papers on special topics that are important to ergonomics
in the region. These speakers and their topics will be broadcast on the HFESA
2004 Website early in 2004 and in later announcements.

Submission of Papers
The Conference Organising Committee invites the submission of papers (for oral
and poster presentations), and ideas for seminars, discussion panels, workshops,
videos or other multimedia presentations to be considered for presentation at
the conference.
We would appreciate an indication of your interest by e-mailing or faxing the
attached form to the Conference Organiser, Rachael Glover (details on next
page).
Expressions of interest in participating should include 1.

short title for the presentation/seminar/workshop etc
three sentences on the author’s qualifications and experience relating to
the presentation/seminar
a 200 word abstract indicating the subject matter and the target audience
four key words for identification in databases
whether the work described is on-going or completed
whether the work is subject to constraints such as commercial or military
sensitivity
More details of the format for all papers and presentations will be advised once
your Expression of Interest Form has been received. Alternatively details will also
be posted on the HFESA Website in early February.
Expressions of interest should be sent by fax (+61-(0)2-6295 5946) or by e-mail as
an attached document in a Microsoft Word or PDF (Acrobat) file to
secretariat@ergonomics.org.au as soon as possible. The deadline for full copies
of papers (to be received by the Conference Organiser) is 1 April 2004.

Papers submitted by this time will be refereed and authors will be informed if they
have been accepted by 14 May 2004.
Following an evaluation of proposals for other types of sessions, presenters and
organisers will be notified of their acceptance by 14 May 2004 that their program
proposal has been accepted. These may or may not include papers. Accepted
papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings. Copyright for published
papers will be held by the HFESA and the first author will need to sign a copyright
release form.
Host City
Australia's premier regional city, Cairns is the international gateway into Tropical
North Queensland, and carries with pride the mantle of safest tropical city in the
world.
Residents of the area are also proud to be custodians of two of the world’s
greatest natural treasures - the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics
Rainforests. Both of these wonderful attractions are World Heritage listed, and
there are very few places on Earth where two such treasures rest side by side.
Cairns International Airport is the nation’s fifth busiest in terms of international and
domestic passenger movements, and the city also is rated the third most popular
tourist destination in the country after Sydney and Brisbane. The city is a vital,
cosmopolitan centre and its residents enjoy an enviable tropical lifestyle

February 2004. Please indicate your interest on the response form located on the
last page.
During 2004 all grades of members of the Human Factors and Ergonomics
Society of Australia Inc.are invited to enter the photographic competition,
subject matter being "People at Work". A charge of $35.00 will be placed on all
entries submitted for the competition to cover framing costs. The winner will be
announced at the Conference dinner in 2004. The collection will be kept
together for 12 months as it is anticipated the collection will go on tour around
the country and if successful ,may be published as a coffee table book.
Photographers are reminded that 35mm film and digital 4mp and above is
required to ensure high quality photos. Remember, it may be necessary to
obtain the subject's permission prior to taking the photograph. Don't delay, get
your camera out now...
