Higher Education Institutions In Pakistan
Introduction
Education in Pakistan is divided into five levels: primary (grades one through
five); middle (grades six through eight); high (grades nine and ten, leading to the
Secondary School Certificate); intermediate (grades eleven and twelve, leading to a
Higher Secondary School Certificate); and university programs leading to graduate
and advanced degrees.
All academic education institutions are the responsibility of the provincial
governments. The federal government mostly assists in curriculum development,
accreditation and some financing of research.
Islamabad has the highest literacy rate in the country at 72.38%, where as Musa
Khel has the lowest at a meager 10.37%.[5] Between 2000—2004, Pakistanis in the
age group 55–64, had a literacy rate of almost 30%, those aged between 45–54 had
a literacy rate of nearly 40%, whilst those between 25–34 had a literacy rate of
50%, where as, amongst those between 15–24, more than 60% were literates.[6]. As
you can see, with every passing generation, the literacy rate in Pakistan is rising by
around 10%.
A significant contribution to education is made by the hundreds of schools operated
by the Catholic Board of Education, the education arm of the Roman Catholic Church
in Pakistan, which is disproportionate to the size of the Christian community.

SUPERIOR UNIVERSITY
Our History
In the year 2000 when the world was moving towards a new millennium, South Asian
Educational Promotion Network was making plans to develop educational facilities in
Pakistan. They were in search of such leadership which could fulfill their aims and
make that project a success. They found the leadership in the form of Prof. Dr. Ch.
Abdul Rehman, who was a young passionate person with lots of enthusiasm to do big
for his country and to bring a positive change in the society. The amalgamation/
meeting of two giants was fruitful and the first campus with the name of Superior
started working in 31-Tipu Block, New Garden Town, Lahore. The right mix of team
was selected to sum this passionate institution. It was the purity of purpose that in the
first year Superior had an enrollment of 1000 students. The message was in air for all
competitors that ‘SUPERIOR IS HERE TO STAY’. Next year the number doubled and
then rest is ‘history’. Every year the name started to rise and grew more respected in
the eyes of all academic circles. In 2003 Superior got NOC from the Govt. of the
Punjab.
Just after a year it was elevated to another level through the charter. Superior Group
of Colleges was recognized as a degree awarding institute. In 2007 Superior decided to
expand and the search started for a project director who could fulfill this dream. As it
is always said in Superior that you have to run after your dreams to achieve them. This
attitude was found in a person who was recognized as the best managerial resource.
The board of directors showed their full confidence on Mr. Rana Adeel Mumtaz and
was hopeful that he could bring the desired results. The task was taken up and
colleges were opened in Faisalabad, Okara, Multan and Raheem Yar Khan. Here also a
phenomenal growth was shown in the first year. This project underwent great success
and in 2008 Sargodha campus was opened and in the first year it was a mega success.
Now in 2009 a new college has opened in Sialkot. This is not the end Superior family is
still looking for new avenues. Like any success story, Superior’s tale of miracles does
not end here, it has been transformed from the fastest growing institute of Pakistan to
“FIRST INTERNATIONAL STANDARD INSTITUTE OF PAKISTAN".

Higher Education Institutions In Pakistan
Welcome to Bahria University, an Institute of unbounded potential with quality and innovation as
our guiding star. Since I took over as Rector Bahria University, I have observed an aptitude of
limitless prospects within the students. It is my vision to make Bahria University the best
educational institute in the country.
This challenge may seem daunting, but I am confident we will rise to the occasion. It will entail
discipline and integrated effort, as they say “NONE OF US IS AS SMART AS ALL OF US”. I want to
create an environment of collaboration and teamwork to make this vision our collective
obligation. In order to imbue leadership and instill discipline while maintaining the friendly
environment, we must create an interactive student based learning environment where the
student’s mind can thrive with creativity.
We also need to work on the weakest link of the class to ensure superior standards and produce
human resource of the highest quality.
We have to pursue self reliance, for independence begets genius. We must be self dependant in
order to lead. To be the best we have to rely on our own originality and imagination.
My strategy to achieve the vision is to incorporate practicality with theory. We must create the
requisite bridge between the university and the corporate sector, opening the doors for immense
research potential which in turn will allow the students to utilize their academic knowledge for
practical projects.

University of the Punjab
we are the country's leading university, offering a very broad program of studies at the Degree,
Diploma, Postgraduate, M.Phil, and Ph.D. levels. Being the most prestigious, largest and highest
seat of learning in Pakistan, the University has more than 560 faculty members, over 24,000 oncampus students and above 434 affiliated colleges and 10 constituent colleges.
The University has a highly qualified teaching faculty that provides instruction to students in
the fields of Arts, Science & Technology, and provides guidance to undertake research in
agriculture, industry and allied subjects for developing new products. We are forever reassessing
ourselves and our programs in order to develop and improve courses for meeting the everchanging demands of the world and for preparing students for high professional standards while
at the same time promoting personal growth. We are also reorganizing curricula to foster greater
creativity in research and exploration into new areas that require integrating finely specialized
research fields. At present over 650 students are registered in the Ph.D. programs of various
disciplines under the regular Ph.D. scheme. It is our endeavor to produce at least 100 Ph.Ds
every year.
Keeping in view modern trends and market demands a fiber optic cable network, more than
30 km long, has been laid to provide high-speed Internet access and LAN connectivity. Our plans
are bold and imaginative. The commitment of the University of the Punjab is not only to provide
higher education, but also to carry out research and to deliver academic services for the benefits
of the country and society. Fifteen new Departments/Centers/Institutes including a School of
Biological Sciences and Hailey College of Banking & Finance were established during the year
2002-2003. Besides this 20 new programs were launched during the last three years.
We believe that every student has the requisite potential and our aim is to see that this
potential is realized and fulfilled. Such a committed, learner-centered approach to education
means that we have a happy and purposeful community that strives for excellence in all
academic activities. We are all proud of our achievements. And we can assure you that if you
choose to achieve academic qualifications with us here, your time will be stimulating and
rewarding and you will develop understanding, reasoning, originality and creativity in your

the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan and one of its the subcampuses has been
opened at Sahiwal since January 2005 to promote the policy of the Government to
bring education at the doorsteps of the masses. The city of Sahiwal is ideally located

History of IBA
IBA is the oldest business school outside North America. It was established in
1955 with initial technical support provided by the world famous Wharton School
of Finance, University of Pennsylvania; later, the University of Southern California
set up various facilities at the Institute and several prominent American
professors were assigned to the IBA. The course contents, the curriculum, the
pedagogical tools and the assessment and testing methods were developed under
the guidance of reputed scholars from these two institutions. IBA has jealously
guarded the high standards and academic traditions it had inherited from
Wharton and USC while adapting and adjusting them with the passage of time. A
large number of Pakistani faculty members received advanced degrees from
Wharton and the University of Southern California.
Till 1994, the University of Karachi awarded degrees to the graduates. In that
year the Sindh Assembly elevated the Institute's status to that of a degreeawarding institution. A bill is pending in the Assembly for conferring the status of
a University to IBA. Inspite of a rapid increase in the number of business schools,
the IBA has maintained its position as the premier institution of higher learning in
the field of management and business administration.
The IBA initially offered MBA program only for day scholars. In 1957, an Evening
Program was started to cater to the needs of the numerous working executives
and managers who were interested in furthering their careers through part-time
business studies. In 1982, a three-year BBA (Honors) Program was introduced
which has now been upgraded into a four-year BBA program.

The Center for Computer Studies was established in 1983 with the collaboration
of IBM, Pakistan. It initially offered a diploma in system analysis to overcome a
shortage of software professionals in the country. It now offers BBA (MIS), MBA
(MIS) and BS (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information
Technology), MS (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information
Technology) and PhD programs. The PhD degree is being offered in the areas of
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Information and Communication
Technology (ICT), Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence, Cryptography,
Numerical Analysis and Numerical Computing. In addition a PhD program in
MIS/Computer Science and Engineering/ICT has been launched from August
2005.
The Center for Executive Education offers Executive MBA programs for mid level
public sector, non–profit sector and private sector executives, organizes
customized courses for the corporate clients and holds short courses on emerging
issues and themes for those engaged in business. A new Center for
Entrepreneurial Development is being established and will become fully functional
in 2010.
The IBA Philosophy
The recurrent theme of the 50 years of IBA's existence is that business education
should be rigorous but also relevant and looking to the future. The IBA provides an
enabling environment, conducive to scholarship and research. The faculty, staff,
students and members of the industry work together to achieve learning goals.
Students acquire knowledge and skills through constructive and distinctive processes
that encourage them to develop understanding of business concepts and issues,
think independently and to make rational choices. They are encouraged to take
responsibility for their own learning, to become active participants and leaders, and
to apply their knowledge in real-world context.
The IBA programs are designed to provide world-class professional managers and
entrepreneurs for the business and industry in Pakistan.

Higher Education Institutions In Pakistan
IBA Students
About 1600 students are currently enrolled at the MBA, BBA and BCS programs. MBA
program consists of two years (4 semesters) while BBA program extends over four
years (8 semesters). Distinguishing features of the IBA are the induction of students
through a systematic and merit-based admission process, training in a demanding
academic environment, supervised internships or attachment with industry and ontime completion of study programs. Admission procedures, curricula, methods of
instruction and the system of examinations at the IBA give it a unique position
among leading educational institutions in Pakistan.
The IBA ensures that no student is deprived of education at the Institute because of
financial constraints. Scholarships, stipends and financial assistance are provided on
the basis of need. A National Talent Hunt Program aims at attracting and training
poor but meritorious students from the backward districts of Pakistan to enter IBA.
Students take part in a broad variety of activities ranging from volunteering for
charity work and participating in athletic events to organizing conferences on a
variety of business issues. A spirit of involvement is important because teamwork,
leadership and being a responsible citizen are the foundations of the IBA experience.
IBA Faculty
IBA has 80 full time and 85 part time and visiting faculty members teaching courses
in Management, Marketing, HR, Strategy, Finance, Economics, Quantitative Methods,
Organizational Behavior, Computer Sciences, Ethics, Social Sciences, Chinese,
Arabic. The faculty is drawn from two streams i.e. academic and practice. Academic
| P a g e | 45

faculty mostly consists of those holding Doctorate or Master’s degrees from well
reputed universities while the faculty in practice draws upon the large reservoirs of
top leaders, chief executives, senior managers who are and have been associated
with the corporate sector. This blend of faculty ensures academic rigor as well as
practical relevance in the design and delivery of courses at IBA. Academic faculty
members are engaged in research and writing professional papers, advising
companies and organizing training courses for the industry, public sector etc. A
variety of pedagogical tools is deployed at the Institute ranging from lectures, class
participation, case studies, research reports, company visits to equip the students.
IBA Alumni
IBA has produced about 8000 graduates to-date, each one being an outstanding
professional. Most of the Chief Executives and top management positions in leading
listed companies, corporations and banks are held by the alumni of IBA. The IBA
graduates have worked and matched in performance with the graduates of the most
renowned business schools of the world and is the school of choice for most of the
young men and women interested in careers and leadership in business.
A large number of IBA graduates are working outside Pakistan in the Middle East,
UK, Canada and the United States. Among its prominent alumni is one of the former
Prime Ministers of Pakistan.
Governance and Management
A Board of Governors consisting of 17 members drawn from the representatives of
the government, private sector, prominent educationists, alumni, eminent citizens
and faculty oversees the operation of the IBA, sets the policy and the strategy and
supervises the financial management of the Institute. The Institute is headed by
Dean/Director who is assisted by Associate Deans, chairpersons of the departments
on the academic side with the heads of support departments on the administrative

affairs. The IBA relies on student tuition fees, income from Executive Education, and
income from Endowment Fund and other funds. Capital expenditure and human
resource development for faculty development are financed by grants from the
Higher Education Commission, private sector and foundations.
Future Strategic Direction
Having realized that it can no longer thrive on its past laurels and has to adapt itself
to the changing market demands IBA has embarked upon an ambitious five year
strategic plan with the objective to become one of the top 100 global business
schools and one of the top 10 regional business schools. It has benchmarked itself
against a few chosen business schools in India, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and
Turkey. The four pillars of this strategy are




Investment in physical infrastructure
Faculty Development
Technology up gradation
Community outreach and links to industry
IBA is exploring collaborative partnerships, alliances and exchange programs with
the top business schools. Generous financial supports from HEC, foundations, private
sector have been obtained to implement this plan in the next five years. IBA has
recently become the first institution in Pakistan to become partner of CFA Institute,
SAP University alliance and other such ventures. Seeking accreditation to the Asian,
European and US bodies are part of the plan. The management is seeking other
avenues of collaboration with the Universities and B-schools in Asia.

Since this campus is the youngest of all the four campuses, it is in its growing stage
with regard to student strength, which is presently one of its positive qualities. With
a smaller number of students there is an atmosphere of friendliness. The faculty
members know all students by name and give them individual attention. The
traditional hospitality of the area also makes the students feel at home.

before the overshadowed Campus’s beauty can capture his attention. The visitor
experiences an instantaneous dilemma. He does not know whether to admire the
panoramic scenery of the city, which lies before his eyes or marvel the academic
décor of the Campus. Spread over a 15-acre land, right in the academic hub of the
city, Islamabad Campus is steadily expanding both in terms of its area and study
programs.
The highly qualified, deeply committed, and professionally inspired faculty gives to
the university an academic character. The faculty not only excels in their teaching
abilities but also keep themselves abreast of the latest trends and developments in
science and technology. They are also accomplished researchers, contributors, and
developers in their respective areas of interest. The research projects carried out at
the Campus range from Bio-Informatics, Agro-Informatics, Machine Intelligence, and
Neural Networks to IT consulting.
True to the name of the university, National University of Computer & Emerging
Sciences, the academic growth of the Campus can be gauged from the fact that in
the past one decade, the University has moved from one undergraduate program in
Computer Science to 4 undergraduate programs in Telecom Engineering, Computer
Engineering, and Management Science. The University also offers a graduate
program in Computer Science. The graduates of the Islamabad campus have been
well-received in both national and multinational industry. Many of them are serving
in prestigious institutions and organizations across the world like Microsoft, Oracle,
NCR, LMKR, IBM, and PTCL, etc.
The campus offers state of the art facilities in professional, academic, and extra
curricular terms. The spacious and well-equipped computer and engineering labs
provide to the students a practical orientation in their respective areas of study. The
audio-visually supported and comfortably furnished class rooms present to the
students a conducive and enabling learning environment.
To help relax the worn out minds and to avoid students turning into dull boys and
girls, the Campus offers its students sufficient sports facilities. They can go to the
cricket and football grounds, play badminton, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, to
test their stamina. They can also wrestle their minds in the chess competitions.
Programming competitions too attract here the interest of the students, as if it was a
fun activity. NaSCon, a national level software competition organized by the Campus
has now become a household name in the software and engineering communities
around the country.
