SECTION 02715 DISINFECTION OF DOMESTIC WATER SYSTEMS PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 WORK INCLUDED A. 1.02 Provide personnel, equipment and supplies to disinfect and test all potable water systems, including water lines, water storage reservoirs, water wells and new plumbing systems, including flushing at completion of treatment. Regulatory Agency Requirements: Comply with applicable state requirements. B. The Contractor shall take special care to keep the interior of the pipe clean during storing, handling, and laying operations in order to reduce the need for flushing to an absolute minimum. In addition, all open ends shall be tightly covered whenever unattended to prevent small animals and dirt from entering the pipeline after it is in place. 1.05 SUBMITTALS A. Disinfection Program; submit the following to be used during the program: 1. Cleaning Equipment. 02715 - 1 2. 3. 4. B. 1.06 Type and form of disinfectant Rinsate disposal. Testing laboratory. Test Reports; submit two copies as follows: 1. Disinfection report; include: a. Date issued, project name and location. b. Treatment Contractor's name, address and phone number. c. Type and form of disinfectant used. d. Time and date of disinfectant injection start. e. Time and date of disinfectant injection completion. f. Test locations. g. Initial and 24-hour disinfectant residuals in ppm for each outlet tested. h. Time and date of flushing start. i. Time and date of flushing completion. j. Disinfectant residual after flushing in ppm for each outlet tested. 2. Bacteriological report; include: a. Date issued. b. Project name and location. c. Laboratory's name, certification number, address and phone number. d. Time and date of water sample collection. e. Name of person collection samples. f. Test location. g. Time and date of laboratory test start. h. Coliform bacteria test results for each outlet tested. i. Certification that water conforms or fails to conform to bacterial standards or fails to conform to bacterial standards of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. j. Bacteriologist's signature. PROJECT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Project against damage and contamination. B. Maintain caution labels on hazardous materials. C. Maintain storage room dry and with temperatures of uniform as possible between 60 degrees F (15.6 C) and 80 F (26.7 C). 02715 - 2 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Disinfectant: 1. Free chlorine 2. Liquid, powder or tablet. B. Water: 1. Required for filling, flushing and testing the line will be furnished by the Owner at no cost to the Contractor, within reason, at such points along the pipeline as water is available from the existing distribution or supply systems. 2. Wasting of water will not be condoned and such actions may require the Owner to make appropriate charges for such water. 3. The Contractor shall make provisions to provide the water, by tank truck or other means, to the points necessary to produce specified test pressure. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 INSPECTION A. Prior to starting work, verify that domestic water system is completed and cleaned. B. Do not start work until conditions are satisfactory. C. Insure existing system isolated from that portion to be disinfected. 3.02 SYSTEM TREATMENT A. B. Water Distribution and Transmission System: Residual Chlorine Concentration in accordance with Section 4.4 "Methods of Chlorination", AWWA C651-99. 1. General: Three methods of chlorination tablet, continuous feed and slug. Tablet method gives an average chlorine dose of approximately 25 mg/L; the continuous-feed method gives a 24-hr chlorine residual of not less than 10 mg/L; and the slug method gives a 3-hr exposure of not less than 50 mg/L free chlorine. Residual chlorine is not to exceed 250 mg/L. Refer AWWA C651-99 for further details. 2. Water Storage Reservoir: Per AWWA C652-92. C. Water Wells: Per AWWA C654-87. 02715 - 3 D. 3.03 New Building Plumbing Systems: Per local or State Plumbing Code. BACTERIOLOGICAL TEST A. Take samples where and when required by referenced standards or codes. B. Analyze water samples in accordance with "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater", latest edition, published by American Water Works Association. C.
