(1) Estimates for detailed occupations do not sum to the totals because the totals include occupations not shown separately. Estimates do not include self-employed workers. (2) Annual wages have been calculated by multiplying the hourly mean wage by a “year-round, full-time” hours figure of 2,080 hours; for those occupations where there is not an hourly mean wage published, the annual wage has been directly calculated from the reported survey data. (3) The relative standard error (RSE) is a measure of the reliability of a survey statistic. The smaller the relative standard error, the more precise the estimate. 46 Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations 21,200 $20.76 $23.54 $48,960 1.90% Healthcare Practitioner and Technical Occupations 54,170 $28.52 $32.78 $68,180 1.80% Healthcare Support Occupations 22,640 $13.73 $14.25 $29,630 1.70% Protective Service Occupations 25,860 $16.28 $19.39 $40,340 4.20% Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations 101,010 $8.67 $9.78 $20,350 1.20% Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations 40,110 $10.49 $11.62 $24,170 1.30% Personal Care and Service Occupations 34,050 $10.38 $12.97 $26,970 2.60% Sales and Related Occupations 145,940 $14.09 $19.84 $41,260 1.30% Office and Administrative Support Occupations 212,820 $15.80 $16.70 $34,730 0.60% 720 $9.04 $10.97 $22,820 5.20% Construction and Extraction Occupations 70,320 $17.78 $19.03 $39,590 0.90% Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Occupations 48,150 $19.93 $20.47 $42,580 1.00% Production Occupations 50,560 $13.94 $15.44 $32,110 1.10% Transportation and Material Moving Occupations 81,520 $13.90 $16.59 $34,520 4.70% Farming, Fishing, and Forestry Occupations 47 Area Cost of Living Index12 The average value for each category is assigned a value of 100. Social Security: 2008 Colorado Quick Facts14 Social Security is the only source of income for one in four Coloradans age 65+. Social Security lifts nearly half of Coloradan retirees from poverty; 43% of the state’s population would have incomes below the poverty line if they did not receive Social Security. Social Security pumps over $6 billion into Colorado’s economy; the average yearly benefit for a Colorado retiree in 2006 was $12,002 or about $1,000 a month. To continue paying a mortgage after age 50 places great stress on lower-income households according to the analysis of the American Community Survey. For many low-income homeowners the combined costs of principal, interest, taxes, and insurance (PITI), and energy and water utilities exceeds annual income. These households are likely surviving by drawing down assets, by going into debt (including taking money out of the home through refinancing), by borrowing from friends or family, and through a variety of government assistance programs including property tax abatements, utility assistance to low-income families, the earned income tax credit, and tax breaks for mortgage interest and property taxes.
